hi, I need some help please if anyone has any knowledge of this problem.

Background - the Fiat in question is a 56 plate 1.2 grande punto.
I had the starter and solenoid replaced after a completely different starting issue in January (just a clicking noise, would not properly turn over or start in any way).
Collected the car from the garage yesterday after them trying to find the problem for nearly a week testing every day, test drives, trying to re start, letting it sit, re start etc etc. The car annoyingly started every single time (grr!) so a problem could not be diagnosed. Everything else seems right under the bonnet so they are stumped and have asked me to take it back on Wednesday to have another go.

The problem is this, the car drives normally with no warning lights when started. However, I can drive the car 30 miles or 5 miles after starting normally, stop the car, go to restart and sometimes nothing happens at all. No starter, no firing of any fashion. All I get is a very low, quiet hum/buzz a little like a static sort of noise for around 2 secs and then nothing. All electrics are fine whether the engine starts or not. Most times the car will restart a few minutes later or if I very quickly repeatedly turn the key on and off in the ignition. On one occasion nothing worked so I borrowed my partners car after 20 mins of ranting at the damn thing for not starting lol.

This has been going on for over a month now. My partner borrowed it not long back and he said a key/padlock came up on the dash then the car wouldn't lock for him yet did when I went straight back out to do it. I have not seen this icon at any point and drive the car every day both long and short journeys.

I will be trying the spare key if it happens again to see if the issue is the main key.

The car will bump start when not starting on the key every time this is needed.

Anyone had anything similar to this? If so what was the issue so I can get this sorted. I need the car for work desperately and am nervous everytime I get in it to go anywhere in case it just won't go.

Hi, and welcome:)

sounds familiar, somebody will chime in with the answer,;)

TBH if it'll bumpstart fine, it's related to the starter circuit, as ;

the key chip is o.k.,
the fuel supply is o.k.
engine itself is o.k.

a poor earth cable COULD be partly responsible:idea:

Thank you for your input! Those pointers are great for getting me started on figuring out this issue.

I would agree with varesecarzy could be bad earth. Go to guides section and you'll find a guide with all the earth locations from under the bonnet.
