Fiat Grande Punto 1.4 2007

For the first time today i have had an issue with my Fiat Punto, I drove to work fine and there were no issues what so ever.

I went to start it at lunch and it would not start, i tried bump starting in reverse and it started. The ignition was not turning in neutral but seemed to turn when i put it in reverse.

I drove home fine and then when i started it again to go back to work, it started fine but would not let me rev above 1500/2000 rpm. I could drive it ok but could not give any more than 2000 revs. When i got to work i reversed in, turn the car off, left it a minute and started it again - in reverse and it started absolutely fine with full power available.

I have just gone out to start again - in neutral and once again, nothing is happening. I have had a look at the posts on here, I have seen one thing about the car will only start in reverse gear??

I have had some battry issues before but never like this.

If anyone can help, all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, and welcome,
do you mean the starter motor only turns IF reverse gear is selected..??
or will crank over normally.. - I'm a bit confused..??

My only suggestion is a poor earth connection from battery to starter, = engaging reverse puts on tail lights = another Earth route..,

as I said just a thought,

check battery terminal cables are TIGHT,

a meter on battery looking for;
# 12 Volts engine off = critical

= 14 volts with engine running ( alternator)

Has varesecrazy said sounds like bad earth and has for not going over 2000rpm will be down to the car had gone into limp mode. Couldn't say why but this is usually to stop damage to the car.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the response, all resolved now!

for some reason the battery died over lunchtime and it completely drained it (would not let me bump start it) got some jump leads onto it and the old girl started up as normal. No warning lights or immobiliser light on.

Back to normal!

Thanks for your help!
