Hi guys I've been a member a while but haven't posted lafelt apart from to say thanks for a few of the guides that have really helped me out,
I've had my GP 2 years now, unfortunately got the 1.3 75bhp diesel wish I'd gone for the 1.9.
When I select reverse gear I get a horrendous grinding noise 7 or 8 times out of 10, I read on a few places that it's because the car doesn't have a reverse syncro or something so I always have to select 1st gear then select reverse and it's fine, this is great short term but surely this was never intended as a long term fix for the problem? Is it a sign that the clutch or gearbox could need replacing? any advice would be greatly appreciated!

cheers

Hi, in a word NO, ;)
you are correct - it's because reverse has no synchromesh

so.. make sure when you've pulled up - wait a second for the shafts still spinning in the gearbox to actually stop going around,

then when you want to engage reverse.. you're not trying to get a stationary gear (reverse) meshing with one that's still rotating.

obviously "in time" the grinding would wear away a crucial amount of gear tooth material.. however you should be fine for thousands of miles to come, (y)(y)

Thanks buddie I'll be sure to keep that in mind!

And never try to engage reverse with the car still moving (both ways)

First stop
Clutch in
Wait a sec or two
Engage reverse

If you still have a grinding sound there is a clutch issue.

I had same problem a while back, and I done all of the above mentioned, which worked for a while, but in the end up it got that bad the only way to select reverse without the gear crunch was to turn ignition off and then select it, then start up with it still in reverse. End of the day, I had to get a new clutch fitted, no problem now what so ever.
