Hi all, sometimes when I go to start my car I get the starter turning over but car will take 10 seconds or so just to start. Its not all the time but has happened twice. No warning lights come on or any of my dashboard. When it comes to life the mileage will display after few seconds. It will start first time and when warm no issues. Had my battery tested and that's fine. Its charging fine too. Had service done two weeks ago with manufactory's oil, an iridium spark plugs (high mileage). Only thing I can think of is the map sensor or even then cold start sensor (wondering if not getting enough power due to sensor saying not cold). Had this on my last car but was the map sensor (diesel though). Its a 1.4 8v petrol 2009 an do lot short journeys (do some big ones too).

Kind regards Neil

Has the battery been replaced at all? If not, here's a few things to try and pin it down:

- Whack a multimeter on the battery to measure the voltage with the car off, then get someone to start the car. Is there a volts drop?

- Turn ignition on, turn car lights on, then start the car. Do the lights dim when cranked?

Also, what's the history of the car like? Serviced and looked after regularly?

Had car for 12 months near enough. Just been serviced and I got it done when got the car. Not sure if been replaced before got car but had it tested today said all fine 2/3 charged and he did the lights turn over etc. Its intermittent (only just started) and when cold. Why thinking sensor. It had a proximity alignment done via fiat (tried updating blue and me an caused flashing mileage. Still does it bit dealer says its fine).

It could take a few seconds to start before but was cold weather and don't think spark plugs been changed been ages. Afterwards ran great till this. Its running better since service.

It's going for front breaks done on Wednesday so will get them check the plugs are in properly, get them check battery voltage from cold (in case it's discharging due to the cold) and sensors. Hopefully find out what it is.

Mine's a 1.2 so not the same engine but I had a similar problem caused by:
1. A breather hose split (common on 1.2s)
2. A torn and loose air box seal

It was a real pain to start with these. Sorted them and now it's all fine. I guess having air leaks makes the mixture wrong which is worse at startup.

Also two checks always worth doing on these cars:
1. that the engine compartment earths are not corroded
2. that your fusebox is dry

Will check them tomorrow see what happens. Thanks for the info. Soon has i figure it out will post in case someone with same engine has similar problem.
