I have a 1.4 16v Grande Punto with 6-speed gearbox. 70,000 miles

As said in the title the issue only really affects the lower 3 gears. I try not to apply too much force when changing gears, but it will eventually go into gear if i persist. Double de-clutching also works. Its also a very intermittent problem, sometimes the change will be extremely smooth but it is common enough for it to become an irritant.

From what I've read, worn synchro-mesh is a possibility.

Any one else had this problem? Is it worth fixing?

Slight gearbox leak was noted on its last service. Don't know if this is relevant... probably not.

Change gearbox oil

Also check clutch condition

Mine is worst first thing on a morning coming out of first and then into second you have to give it a bit more push to get in gear or pause for a second

2nd is the main problem for me too. Have you considered getting it sorted?

I have the same problem, checked the gearbox oil and it was fine.

But I did notice oil on the rear of the gearbox housing, could this be clutch fluid? Is there a leak on the line or the cylinders?

Could be a cable problem

Since the cylinder is on the front I don't think it's possible (check fluid level)

Most likely to be oil from the gearbox breather (y) normal

Oil is from the selector shaft seal. I have never had a dry one I yet! Drips down and people think it's the driveshaft seal gone

This sounds like you have a clutch problem (70.000miles - still factory clutch?)
Clutch in all the way - wait 3sec - engage reverse slowly. is there any grinding noise?
(this is the correct way to engage reverse anyway)

If you don't have a grinding noise but you have to put a lot of force, engage 4th and then R.

This applies to 1st gear too.

Check your clutch condition and replace gearbox oil.

This did cross my mind, no evidence of it being replaced but I've only had it since about 60,000 miles.

No grinding noise when reversing, and not really any resistance when engaging reverse to be honest.

My Fiat/ Alfa garage is a bit out of the way but I'll maybe give them a call.

Cheers
