Can you select the gears when the engine is off and car stationary?

You shouldn't have to reset everything but if you've put the clutch plate in the wrong way round then the clutch is probably not disengaging and not letting you select the gears

look to see if anything you replaced COULD BE reversible, ;)

doubt if it's the clutch..,as it would be the same in ALL gears..,

like you said ..most likely the cables are incorrectly set, and at extent of travel,

You need to reset one of the cables... the only one that has adjustment.

just try both directions until it feels better.

hi I with car started I can get 3rd and 4th only cant get 1st and second and reverse. clutch feels great and it drives in the 3rd gear and 4th. ive had vw with the same problem and you have to take the cables off then locate a pin into the gearbox on the selector then refit cables job done .I did mention to a friend and he said you have to do the same but cant remember how.

if it's a 6speed you have to a self-adjustment device (quick adjuster as fiat names it) located on the gear selection cable.
