Check transmission, see handbook

Hi guys I have seen numerous posts on the check transmission error here but no sureshot remedies.
My car is a 56 plate 1.4 GP with the dual logic gearbox. I've seen the 'check transmission, see handbook' error before but it was never became an issue until yesterday night when the car refused to engage gear in the middle of the road. After several attempts of restarting failed I gave up and called my breakdown service. Because it was late night there were no garages open so I simply got them to drop the car home.
It's now parked and I am wondering what to do next. I am non-technical person and after hearing all the horror stories about Fiat am praying and hoping I find a solution independently.
Any thoughts and input will really help..
One more thing, I also noticed something like a 'excessive fluid, take a u-turn' error, have no idea what it meant..

Thanks in advance

Re: Check transmission, see handbook

So... whose fault is it that ou were stranded in the middle of the road late in the night???
If you are a not technical person best thing to do is find a good independent garage that specializes in Fiats/Alfa/Lancia.
Take the car to them and have them read the fault codes. then check what the hydraulic pressure is and how often the pump starts.
It can be possible here is just a small problem with the accumulator ( a sort of battery that gets charged with hydraulic pressure)... a lot of people have problems with leaking etc..

Get it to a specialist.

Re: Check transmission, see handbook

Thanks for your response. I am not sure who is to be blamed here but i don't see a point dwelling onto that.
The other observation i can recall from last night is that i am unable to hear the 'wheeeeeeeee' noise when i open the driver side door.
Could this be related to the selespeed pump? is there a way to quickly diagnose this?
Also the error i mentioned in my orginal post was 'Excessive radiator fluid'.
Here is the sequence of events
- I fired up the engine last night (temperate outside was about 2 degrees)
- The "excess radiator fluid temp. stop and turn off engine" error shows up alongwith 'cold icy conditions' message
- The car starts but with a couple of 'coughs'
- I drive for about 5 minutes and the gear changes to neutral while at a slope
- from then on the car will refused to engage into any gear (after trying for several minutes and numerous restarts)
- The "excess radiator fluid temp. stop and turn off engine" shows up intemittenly in between the check transmission error
- I check for the 'wheeeeeeeee' noise by opening/shutting driver side door but no sign of it

Any ideas on what could be wrong?

Re: Check transmission, see handbook

the "wheeeeeeeee" sound is the dualogic pump ( it starts every now and then to create pressure in the
Could be a relay or a fuse but it can also be more seriously check this also:
http://www.partsworld-uk.com/product..._pump_51736315
check google check your car.. find the actual electric motor for the dualogic pump on the gearbox.
after you find it.. get a hammer/ pry-bar.. something and give the pump a few gentle taps.

Then check if the pump starts.. ( close/open doors)

Where abouts are you? Get it to a local specialist for diagnosis then people here can probably help/advise you on the best course of action

Re: Check transmission, see handbook

Hi I have recently bought a Fiat Grande Punto 1.4 semi auto and we had gone from London to Milton Keynes and further. I have the exact same problem however I still can't find a solution. When I scanned the car with a diagnostic tool it came up as multiple codes: 'CAN U1701 network (NCR-NCM)' , 'P1810 Clutch System' , 'P1773 Hydraulic Circuit Pressure' , 'P1819 Engine torque (from CAN)' , 'P0710 Temperature (from CAN)' When the car was working a couple of times it said Engine Coolant Temperature. And now the car doesn't even move it just says 'check handbook'
Thanks
