Want to give the MAF sensor a clean, precautionary more than anything but I do sometimes notice the car stutter a little bit in 3rd/4th when only just on the throttle to maintain speed. Im assuming its the part located right after the air filter (i couldnt find a guide to confirm that) but I cant get it seperated from the air filter housing because the clamp that holds it isnt a normal hose clamp and so I cant find where I can loosen it. Any ideas anyone?

Cheers,
Jack

Give your EGR valve a clean :) I found in my experience the stutter was caused by it being clogged up...

Gave it a clean today, still quite laggy - practically no boost up until 2000-2200 rpm then it regains power until redline as it should. Will give it another clean tommorow, was loosing light today so rushed it. Tried running without the MAF and that didnt help, any other ideas?

I think thats normal... KBonnie may be able to confirm... I can't remember I havn't had my M-jet for a good 7 months now..

most cars have a boost limiter built into the ECU in 1st and 2nd gears... to protect the gearbox, clutch, tires...etc

I had my car mapped by a man in a van because it was on offer so I think mine kicks in a little earlier now. But around the 2000-2200 mark seems about right to me. Look at fitting a boost gauge maybe so you can see if it is holding boost. You could have a small tear/leak in a boost pipe so its not holding as well. Have you checked them? Think there is only 4 all together.

Yeah it seems to boost alright in gears 3-6 but in 1 and 2 it seems to lag and you only get power around 2500rpm then it kicks in hard. Im in the capable hands of Lloyd at Clovertech now so hopefully he will find whats going on; if not the first thing I will check is the boost pipes. Thanks!

Great hope clovertech can sort you out.
Keep the thread updated in case people have the same issue in the future.
Hope its nothing major for your sake!

Cars in with Lloyd now, he reckons its the AFM so getting a new one - logically it would make sense as the lag is less noticeable in higher gear so possibly high speed = more air going through intake and so is operating properly? I dont know, but if it sorts it then im happy. Real pleasure dealing with him, hes also sorting out my drivers side front spring which sheared last night thanks to a pothole and sorting one of the bolts holes that the corrugated EGR pipe fixes to the engine as it was slightly stripped thanks to the idiotic owner before me that overtightened it and caused me to pull out a load of the thread when i cleaned it this weekend. £277 for that which inc labour, parts and the diagnostic. Not bad and i dont resent paying it like i would had i gone to halfrauds or other 'established' chains.

Will update when ive collected the car.

Not the cheapest then but better than a new turbo!
You want to go and get pictures of the pothole and send a complaint to your local council to claim back what you've had to pay to have it fixed. Make sure to keep the old parts as im sure they'd want to see them. Take as many pictures as you can as proof.

Yeah I will be doing, only problem is the spring fractured slightly before it actually popped out so I will have to find the pothole first! Yeah just fingers crossed the new MAF sorts it, I told lloyd i dont want to just be replacing bits if they dont need it and aside from the praise he gets on here and the alfa forum he does know his stuff and seems an honest bloke.

MAF replaced, car is back to normal again (YAY!), on the way home hit 50mpg for the first time and thats a mixed east london + m25 so very happy considering the best i had on a long journey was 47mpg and last week i got 35mpg. Service at Clovertech was brilliant, Lloyd and his son gave fantastic service, going back tommorow to collect my spare key that i forgot so I will have the pleasure of seeing their Blue HGT mk2 Punto, sitting on borbets! ha

Same here! In hindsight it makes sense - poor performance in 1st and 2nd when speed is low and thus no air flow but much better when at speed when air flow is good and thus relating to the MAF. Something defo to keep in mind when trying to tell the difference between a MAF and EGR fault as a lot of the symptoms are the same but logic suggests EGR would result in low power regardless of speed. Luckily there were fault codes pointing towards MAF anyway.
