....stumped all the guys at the local Halfords!

I got a new stereo for xmas as a week or so ago all my speakers just stopped working. The original head unit works normally, reads cd's, plays the radio etc.. but no sound from the speakers.

I took my new head unit to Halfords to get fitted and exactly the same thing happens, the head unit works, there is an electrical signal from the main loom to the speakers and the speakers work yet there is no sound at all. They tried a few stereos they had in stock and it was the same for them all. They have never seen anything like it and I left with no new install and a quiet car.

Any ideas?

1. How do you know it "plays the radio" if there is no sound?
2. How do you determine that the speakers work, with no sound?

If your unit is plugged into the setup in Halfords, does it work their speakers ok? This will confirm good output from your head unit.

Can you run speaker wires direct from the head unit to your speakers to confirm your speakers will work?

Unusual for all the speakers in a car to die simultaneously. If you have Blue&Me, this could be muting the speakers. Disconnect the B&M unit and try again.

All the components work, they were all tested separately, at first they thought the amp in the head unit was gone but they tried a different unit and it was the same, the displays on the units show a station being tuned in or a cd playing normally. There is nothing disrupting the power supply from the loom in the dash to the speakers as the current to each speaker was tested. The speakers were then tested and none of them have blown. There is no reason there should be no sound. I dont have Blue&Me (dont know what it is!)

All at the same time? Volume too loud? Full details of the circumstances will help. Quite possible to have blown all four at once if using OE speakers to compete with mates!

How do you know it works normally? Have you connected it to other speakers?

How do you establish the above? How can you know they "work" if there is no sound? After all, producing sound is what they do, if they are not doing that, how can they be working?

Ideally you need to test the speakers in the car,
if you have a volt meter set it to resistance and check the speaker one by one at the ISO, you should usually get a reading around 4ohms +/- 0.4 if the speaker is good, if you get nothing the speak is dead, the coil is broken.

Out of the two iso's it is the one where the retaining clip is centred.

Test pins top and bottom that's each speaker.
