my car some times starts and others not and I have to jump start it, some times it starts on the second turn of the key others first, there no real pattern. I leave it all night it starts in the morning I leave it 2 hours and it won't start.
Any ideas ?


In the process of trying to start the car my mate was pushing and has left 2 dings with his palms hardly notice them but there annoying me do you think if I remove the boot plastics ( inside ) I could use a piece of wood to leaver the dents out there just under the crease below the window.

It's a 1.9 multijet

If you turn the key and wait about 5-10 seconds before starting, is it any better?

I discovered this trick that works to get the 1.3 started, might be the same for the 1.9.

I have tried that dosent seem to make any different, it some times works with my foot on the accelerator not sure itch that's relivent, if I turn it over for 5-10 seconds it plumes white smokeim guessing it's unburn fuel ?

Glow plugs or glow plug relay?.

Foot on accelerator only helps starting petrols (although that's a whole different kettle of fish). The glow plugs need a long time to work before you try starting the engine, wait for the glow plug light to go out and then some, and it should be much better.

The glow plug light is working fine I leave it a few seconds longer normally
How can I check the relay ?

In the morning it starts fine after I have run it and leave it for 1-5 hours it struggles to start sometimes so much it wears the battery out.
Just leaving some for info on my findings.

Another thing to add I's I don't have the key with the buttons on its only the spare, could this have something to do with the imobaliser ?

unlikely..

does turning the ignition on ..wait for glowplugs to heat (don't crank) turn off , straight back on , reheat..THEN CRANK

make it any better, that'll give a poor glowplug a better chance


with the boot,
unclip rear boot panel,
push back out with a cloth covered hand


if not "creased" it should pop back out,

Thank you very much I'll try this technique within the next couple of hour and report back. Ill give them dings a go there not creased.

This didn't work, tried it 3 times and it didn't star at all, again it started first time this morning ???? I have a nother battery here should I charge it and fit it to the car ? Any point ?

Just tried again all electrics work mut the clocks bounce and click, I'll stick the battery in the car on a slow charge it looks new and clean enuf.
