I currently have a 1.4 8v semi auto on a 09 reg. They are good. Not most powerful car. The 8v are non interference engines so if timing belt goes you should be fine. I'd get it checked to see been changed as its due every 4 years so fiat say. Only problems I've found are has follows: the centre console where heater switch is can have light issues (loose wire) common issue amongst most grande puntos, my drivers side foot panel coming away but that's due to the clips broken (not a issue). An a common thing is if look under the bonnet you'll see you air intake pipe. The rubber that connects it to the frame breaks but another common problem (cable tie it in place). Drivers side passenger handel can stick on the outside. As for the car itself I like it. Nice drive good fuel looks good. Oh an don't update the blue&me if got it, I did and didn't update correctly so I caused my mileage to flash. An if the garage services the car make sure they do a reset via computer or see someone about multiecuscan that will reset it for you. I get average 42.9mpg around town and 53 motorway at 60mph. Here a link to most common issues https://www.fiatforum.com/showthread.php?t=89495

Wrong type of punto

The Mk2 punto was 1999-2003
the mk2b punto was 2003 - 2006 (06)
then the Grande kickin 2006 on a 56 iirc

The 1.4 8v wasn't availible in the mk2/b

I'll let a mod move it for you :)

Ziggy

The Grande Punto was launched in October 2005. (I still have the Top Gear magazine which features it!) Early UK cars were on an 06 plate, with UK press roadtest examples possibly even being on a 55 plate. :)

Any cars can have hg issues but not seen many crop up on here ... Long as its well maintained and treated right they shouldn't usually be an issue

Be aware the FIRE EVO engines as in the gp are not listed as safe so change can belt and water pump at intervals reccomended

Fire evo 8v or 16v? I've read up on the fire engines before got timing belt done and had one before (had a 1.8tdci focus last and didn't do research properly) and the 8v are usually non interference now the 16v same engine are interference engines. This may have changed layer on with new engine layouts etc but a 06 I would imagine be fine has evo only out think 2010

My mate has an orange 1.2 on a 55 plate

That must be 1 of the very 1st few!

55 plate grandes really aren't all that rare, they launched the car towards then end of 2005 and people forget that the newer reg doesn't come out till march (in this case march 06) so several months of 55 registered cars and they always have a run on a new model so tend to sell a few more in those first few months then they do the months following

Auto car reviewed in in sep 2005

and a few on ebay as examples

I have a 2010 Grande Punto Active Sport 1.4 8 valve. Bought from new over the border in Northern Ireland but I live in the Republic.

Overall Im very pleased with it, 3 dr, New Orleans Blue.
Im a self employed driving instructor so it has stood up very well.

Nothing has fallen off or worked loose, apart from the heater vent under the windscreen (interior) raises slightly on one corner with heater on hot.
A common issue with the Grande Punto.

Doing 44.9mpg at moment,a 50/50 mix town/country.

If I was getting a 06 plate Id shy away from anything with too high mileage, same would apply for any car really.

Tony55s, you are from Ireland? You know yourself that the Irish roads are pretty ****ty compared to North of the border so with a car of that age Id buy up north, usually in better shape with higher spec than Fiat Ireland cars.

Best of luck.
