Hi,

My T-Jet is using a lot of Oil, and I was wondering what 'normal' usage would be. Its currently using 1 litre worth over 2 weeks ish (Every 300 ish miles) which to me is a ridiculous amount.

The Manual says that its 400grams to every 1000km for Maximum, which is what, 0.5litres ish to every 600ish miles? Mine is doing double the usage in half the mileage.

And it isn't burning the oil either, seems to just be using it. Could the turbo on its way out?

Any advice would be appreciated,
Cheers,
Will

74,000 on the dot today

Don't know why I said its not burning it earlier, its clearly using it because there is no apparent leakage.

Change the oil and see if that helps , mine wasn't serviced 14k and was using roughly the same amount but it's normall usage now

Thanks for the replys,

Its an 07 plate, but yeah from what I've been reading about its far, far too much oil for consumption. Last time Oil was changed was 9 months ago ish now, will try that.

But like I said, definitely not burning it, or I'd notice the smoke, and def not leaking cause I would see that as well. Leads me to thinking its the Turbo.

I disagree. If it isn't leaking and it isn't being burnt then where is it going? It must be being burnt, but at a slow enough rate that you don't notice it.

For reference, my t-jet is an 07 plate on 51k and has never required oil between services.

I wouldn't wory too much though. Even if it is the turbo, the standard one is cheap and easy to change.

Interesting point, didn't think like that. But surely at 1 litre every two weeks, thats fast enough to notice?

When you say cheap, how much are we talking?

check the oil vapor recirculating thingy.
mine was quite clogged up with grime/burned oil
I took it off the engine.. and used a lot of oven cleaner on it.. it eventually got pretty clean.

I use a fair bit of oil. Not quite the quantity you speak of. I have a bravo and the engine is virtually the same. I believe I have a very slightly larger turbo. May be wrong.
I'll get though a litre of oil with about 600 miles of usage. For me that's about a months worth of use. I too have no visible smoke, and no sign of a leak anywhere.

If you fill your car to max on the dip stick it will burn it off. It's a bad cycle, fill it then it burns it off so fill again, and on and on,the level should be half way on the stick, also adding a oil breather catch tank does wonders, very understated mod, keeps the intake clean and stops oil vapour being drawn into the intake and being burnt which can richen the lambda so adding less fuel, clean air in, right fuel mix in more power cleaner bang :D

I was unaware of that.

I read somewhere that the T-Jet already has a Oil Breather built in?

It does have some sort of oil separator, which has a few valves/flaps that either open or close depending on weather you are on boost or just idling and weather there is enough crank case pressure (there is a membrane and a spring).

My OE oil separator was stuck opened with gunk and crap.. so it was pulling oil directly into the intake and burning it. As well as loosing a lot of boost through it because of the opened valves.

So just take it off the car, take off the cap that keeps in the membrane and spring, then clean it up really good with oven cleaner and a lot of water. Make sure you the valves are working freely and that they close when you pull air through and when you push air through.

That or just fit a new catch can!

Will try cleaning the oil separator, thanks.

Have a busy weekend ahead of me trying to fix this. Annoying thing is I cant work out if it is resolved instantly.

The separator is the big black plastic box-like thing next to the coils, it's attached with a few 10mm bolts ( maybe 2 bolts and one nut) and it has hoses atached ( one going to the intake manifold and the other ( bigger one) goes to the intake pipe before the turbo.
remove the bots and hoses then lift it up.

Thank you :) Will try to work it out on Saturday, will let you know how I get on
