Technical Oil Leak

Hi guys,

Seem to have an oil leak coming from the right hand side of my car. Apparently to do with sump, but I'm not losing too much oil yet. Got it booked in for next week, is it safe to drive it until then? Or will it damage any parts?

Anyone got any clue what it will cost to seal it? One garage quoted £100+VAT but that was when we thought it was the cam shaft seal.

Keep checking dipstick and topping up accordingly if you really need to use/drive car

Its hard to tell without looking

Remember hot oil is thinner thus will leak faster when the engine is hot... And running it will be splashing about due to the oil pump


Also be aware of it leaking or running onto exhaust parts

Andy has hit the nail on the head.
You say that they thought it was the cam shaft seal which is top left, then they think its the sump on the right.
Totally opposite corner.

We had an oil leak on our Starjet, took days to eventually pinpoint it.
Turned out to be the blanking cover for Cam Shaft No2.

Giggs 11 save yourself a lot of time & money.


Go to Fiat & get a new breather hose, there only about £5 & get some Jubilee Clips while your at it, as you need a special tool to refit the original Breather hose clips.


Remove your Airbox off which is only 2 bolts as the air intake hose can be removed by hand, there is also a small hose at the back of your Airbox, remove that.


Take the Airbox off & have a look at the breather hose, it will most likely be split, so the oil inside will look creamy.


The new hose is thicker so less likely to perish.


Get a rag & wipe the excess oil off the engine block & sump.

Took the car to a garage today and its definitely the sump sealing which the oil is leaking from. Its not a big hole but the leak is constant when I stop from a trip out. Can this damage any other components? I guess its not leaking onto anything but the sump body and the floor so I shouldn't think so? Is it worth just replacing the whole sump or just take it off, clean and re apply the sealing? (sump bottom is a bit rusty)

Poured some oil leak stop into the engine oil and need to give it a good drive to see if that can temporarily cease the leak.

Hi, yes quick visual check on the engine as he was closing up so that's why he thought it was the camshaft seal. Went back today and hes sure its the oil sump seal.

Very grateful for your help but I'm as much use as a leak in the bath when it comes to DIY on cars. I will definitely ask someone to do this if the problem isn't rectified by Thursday when it goes back in.

Ach nay bother pal.


Wee word of advice, tell whoever replaces the hose to wear gloves, as there will be quite a bit of oil at either end of the split hose.

Its not the breather he says its coming from the sump gasket I'm not a fan of leak stop if it clogs an oil Gally your looking at a new engine...

If the sump is badly rusted get a new one if not too bad wire wheel and Blatter it in hammerite
