My understanding is that there are two things the key does. Open the doors (remotely in this case) and start them car by physically turning the key in the ignition and at the same time via the keys transponder chip telling the car's ECU that it is the correct key programmed to the car. It's the last piece that is the problem....each car has a unique signal that is programmed onto it's chip. The chip is different across years and models and hence you need to have the same chip that the original key had and then you can get someone to program it to your car. EG My daughters Grande Punto has an ID 46 chip and no way will any other chip in a key work.

So I'm afraid it's not a straight forward job.
