'Gear not Available' occasionally appearing on display

I own a dualogic semi automatic 2008 Grande Punto. When I reverse, for example out of my driveway, and then go to put the car into DRIVE, the gear occasionally doesn't engage. Then the message 'Gear not Available' shows on the display and starts beeping (the same type of beeping as the seat belt warning). To get it into drive, you have to turn the car off, leave it for twenty seconds and then start it up again. This only happens occasionally but it gets quite irritating and sometimes it leaves me stranded in the middle of the road. How could I prevent this from happening? Thanks in advance.

mine does the same from time to time! try this ..when you start car (put into 1st gear ..then 2nd gear then neutral then back into 1st ..then reverse! whenever i've done this the gear not available has not ever happened ..it's a pain & i cannot wait to get rid of this crap car!!!!!

yeah mine is the same and i put a topic on here. what i was told to do was basicly reverse then pop it in neutral then wait 5 seconds then put it in gear. i had to go forward put it in N then wait 5 then in R then go backwards then in N wait 5 then in gear and drive off.
its because engine is cold usualy but it kind of randomly happens.

here is the link.

I've had this last week, worst on a cold morning when it won't select a gear at all, but at other times I can select R, then when I back out into the road and try to select 1, it gives 'Gear Unavailable'.

I checked and replaced the Selespeed fluid (in a clear tank on the front of the gearbox, behind the aluminium shield - the level should reach the green line).

I'm fairly certain I have now found the problem - a weak battery. Going into winter as we are, you might expect problems to be starting about now. Give the battery a recondition charge (if you have an electronic charger that does that), and consider replacing it (mine is the original Magneti Marelli battery).
