Technical Wet driver's footwell, please help!!

Hi,

I discovered both front footwells were soaking wet through a few weeks ago, so I took the seats out removed the carpet and dried it all out thoroughly.

At the same time I bought the longer drain hose for a Mito and installed that and sealed it in place so no water could run down around where it fits in.

I also tigersealed the rusted servo plate so that should now be watertight as the trough is filled and the surface of the plate is covered in tigerseal. I also tigersealed the black plastic cover in place so that should also be waterproof.

Just went outside after a big rainstorm and checked the car - wet through driver's foot well again!!!

I've looked online but all I can see is the servo plate issue which I've already fixed using the guide on here so it shouldn't be that anymore.

Does anyone have any ideas as to where this rainwater is coming from?!

It isn't coolant or ac fluid or anything from the car itself, it's definitely rainwater and the car was parked up so it's not a seam under the car.

If anyone has any ideas that would be great as I'm really lost with this one?!

Just to add,

the water is underneath the carpet in the soundproofing so it doesn't appear to be dripping down onto the carpet as the top is dry.

You can feel the water by putting your fingers through that plastic sliding bit which has the chassis underneath.

So you did the fix but still got wet carpets?

I'm wondering whether to try and replace the entire plate, massive job I know but rather that than a wet, stinking car.

I just want to check if anyone knew of any where else the water could be coming from :/

Check around the scuttle panel, could be a leak at the base of the windscreen. Ever had it replaced?

As far as I know the windscreen is original but I'm the 4th owner so don't really know, but surely if it was leaking through the screen it would drip on top of my carpet?

The wet is underneath the carpet, the top is dry.

No no fix i scrapped it, was always wet, the area didnt even look affected by rust or anything but sealed everything anyway

Oh haha, scrapping would be a bit drastic, it's a good car otherwise, just a bit damp!

Guess it's time to strip it all down again and search for another leak! Sigh.

Hey, at least it'll look like a race car with no carpets

When you've got the carpet up put a hose on the windscreen so you can see where it's coming from.

Just took the carpet out again, I'll be a pro at dismantling this car soon.

When I removed the plastic trim from the sills (kickplates?) it was damp underneath them so perhaps the water is coming in through the door seals or window seal and running behind the door card.

I'll get the hose on it and have a look soon.

Have you checked the brake servo? Common problem, water drips onto it eventually rusting it through causing water to run into the footwell.

Or from door as no garage especially dealerships refit the weathersheetm membrane behind the door card after changing regulator or door lock etc.

Many Fiat cars suffer from poor sealant application around bulkheads, it's not uncommon at all.

Where would the water actually be getting in in that scenario? The window seals maybe?

Its a fiat and your 4th owner....could be coming from any orifice to be honest, get it checked at bodyshop is your best chance of finding the leak,

Lift the carpets up and then dust around with some cheap talc and then hose the car you will soon see where the ingress is .Note mine came in from around the heater area wich turned out to be a leaking windscreen just above it.

Yeah, i assumed it was that at first so fixed that already, still getting wet.

That's not to say it isn't still the problem as we just sealed it not replaced it but we did a pretty thorough job as far as I can tell - access is a killer in the 1.9.

If I don't find any other leaks then I'll have to replace the plate I suppose, don't fancy that though!

With regards to the heater matrix, it is 100% rainwater as it was dry until a heavy rainstorm, got in the car after that - soaking wet and it wasn't being used, just parked outside the house.
