Hi
I have a diesel fiat punto grande 2010 model and it seems as though the battery is flat, I would just like to know if there is some special way to jump start it. I remember a guy at a car dealership telling me that a diesel car is not jump started like a petrol car so I am wondering how to jump start it. I also used my multi meter and checked the battery and got 12v so I am not sure. Oh and when I try start it the needle on the temperature gauge goes all the way up and I get a message saying excess temperature and airbags failed.

Thanks in advance for the help

It's the same however GP diesels use glowplugs like most diesel cars and they need to warm up iirc, some diesels can start off a bump and some can't I think, I'm a bit vague on this though,

If the battery is completely dead a bump won't work and you'll need a jump start as the glow plugs cant warm up but like i said some might start with cold plugs

Avoid bumping if you can ;)

Pretty sure you can jump it like petrol.

I ran my battery down when I first got my GP 1.9
Recovery guy jumped it, went for 30 min drive - about 40 miles ish and car was ok.

Do the same as above, but if you need another jump start within a week or so, alternator maybe gone which means megabux.

New battery only £60-100 depending if you want to go entry/premium.

Keep us posted

The best advice will always be Not to jumpstart a modern car there is always a small risk of an electrical surge damaging the cars computer control units

Using jump leads follow this http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/breakdown_advice/using-jumpleads.html

and been a heavy diesel you will need some heavy duty jump leads

Safest cause of action is to remove the battery from the car and charge it using a mains powered charger ideally a smart one pushing about 4-5 amps to avoid warping the battery plates

eg http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/7404881.htm#pdpFullProductInformation

the temperature gauge and other errors will be there due to the low voltage confusing the cars computer network The air bag light will probably stay on requiring a dealer visit to remove the fault code (normally one relating to bad voltage or bad earthing) if due to the battery been flat
