Hi all,
I've found a few cam belt posts, but nothing that covers this problem.
I have a 1.9 Grande Sporting on a 56 plate. (130 version, if that's relevant) It's done 32k but has no record of having had a belt change, so a friend went to do it for me the other week. I had bought a Gates belt kit as well as a water pump.
When we got it apart though we couldn't get the timing marks to line up. There were three. Crankshaft, Cam and Water pump. When the cam marks were lined up, the others weren't. Tried pulling the belt through a few revolutions, but no luck.
The option was to line up the cam marks, make our own marks on the pump and crank then lock the cam (I had bought the cam locking tool.) Then we found that when the cam marks were lined up the holes for the locking kit were obstructed by the arms of the top pulley! Didn't dare take the top pulley off in case the bolt was just connected to a pressure plate. If that was the case then the cam could have moved as it was loosened whilst leaving the marks still lined up.
Anyway....... We put it back together and I decided to let someone else do it. It won't be a main dealer though as they want £540, and I'll be left with the belt kit and water pump because they will insist on using their own.
So can anyone who has done this cam belt change shed some light on getting it done please? I would much prefer to get it done myself and save a fortune!
And is it really necessary to take the whole bloody front bumper off just to replace the horn? I was going to do that job too at the same time, but gave up when we found where the horn was mounted.
Many Thanks in anticipation,
Louie

I remember my mechanic saying he couldn't line up the timing marks, but unsure what he did in the end, car runs great lol.

He had to take the cam pulley off to get the water pump out though, great Fiat design! And the injection pump doesn't need to be timed up as such.

You can gain access to the horn by taking the upper front grille out but I don't know if you could remove the horn just through the grille hole

Thanks for that. Perhaps I'll just leave it to the mechanic then! Re: the horn. Maybe best to just run a couple of wires off the existing horn and remount a new one under the slam panel?
