Technical C544 6 Speed Gearbox....

I spoke to my mate at fiat, he put the vin in and it worked, problem is like he said it doesn't come up with code for the box just a fiat part/order number, so still none the wiser, he said you tend to find that the M32 or what ever is just a casing number people use for slang talk, each one could have a different unit code for ratios etc?

D'you know, the thought did cross my mind... Here we go again, just when I resigned myself to, 'its an M32', now I find those thoughts of doubt again, could there be different ratios for different cars...?

I don't know :(
The only way I think you can do it is compare pictures of your box to others, and if you get one for the same car least you know it might be the same

Lol! A gearbox man said that he's pretty dam sure that it is an M32, however I'll ask re. ratios, if all M32's are the same, then...

But do be careful they a are on auto trader for about £2500 with about 58000miles, so it better be blooming cheap!

Jonfiat well if the model and specification is now confirmed and it is indeed a 1.9 8V Mjet, then regardless of whether the M32 casing is fitted with different ratios for different specifications, you should be looking for a replacement box that comes out from an equivalent 1.9 8V Mjet! This way you can guarantee it will be the correct box, you just have to ensure the seller of the replacement part can prove the box comes from the vehicle in question.

What you cannot prove with any certainty however, is the condition or the type of life the replacement part has had, nor the condition of the car you are looking to purchase. I would personally question what else might have been neglected with respect to the car you are looking to buy. It is up to you to uncover the truth, unfortunately that's a fact. The person looking to sell will unlikely tell you of any hidden problems, assuming of course the seller knows about any of them, as most second hand dealers are in the business of turning cars over and there are very few who would carry out a full inspection and/or any repairs/maintenance prior to putting it up for sale.

Good Luck!

No they are not all the same. The m32 was fitted to a whole range of different cars and engines, some of which were petrol and thus totally different ratios. As suggested before, getting the gearbox from another Grande 1.9 would be a good bet. Could the existing box not be refurbished? That way you have some hope the bearings aren't going to go two moths later.

It appears that the issue is differential related. The car's at the garage now, so by about Tuesday the gearbox should be out. I think that I'll probably look to get my box refurbished, I've been speaking to a very helpful guy recently who knows these boxes well. Hopefully its just bearings that have deceased and nothing else..? Been trying to understand why the M32 box suffers so much? Is it poor oil level, (I.e. poor maintenance) or is it poor quality bearings or what?

Bearing it would seem. Poor quality. If you do a search on the M32 gearbox, it will bring up a load of other forums. Like Vauxhall etc...

Unfortunately Fiat inherited the use of this gearbox from Vauxhall. I believed Afla used a different 6 speed in the 147, if only they had used that instead!
