Everything I read on this Forum seems to point to an alternator problem?

Last week got a clonking from the steering at low revs parking in a car-park.
Thinking back to all the messages on this problem and realising my battery was very close to 5 years old, I ordered a new bosch 4-year battery and fitted it.

All seemed fine for a few days but now the clonking is back (worse) but no warning lights anywhere.

So just did some checking with the multimeter across the battery terminals.
No load condition 11.5 volts.
Engine running at tick-over 12 volts
Engine running at 2000 rpm 12.5 volts
No load condition with battery charger on 14.57 volts

So it seems the alternator is the culprit? Will see if the clonking is gone when the battery is fully charged overnight. Remember advice is to fit genuine Fiat replacement?

When you say 'clonking', are you referring to a mechanical noise? Like metal on metal?

Clonking from steering is often top strut bearings or a broken coil spring. Your alternator does sound knackered but that may be a separate issue.

Yep i see two separate issues as well. Alternator will cause a host of issues when it's on the way out but not a mechanical noise afaik.

Thanks to both of you. you ere 100% right it was a strut bearing.
Interesting our local Europarts keeps them in stock as they sell so many of them
(£22 each and we will change both to be sure)
An obvious GP weakness then?

All cars have a 'weak point' there if you want to call it so. Keep in mind that generic parts like belts, bearings, brake pads etc will not only fit one vehicle, so that will be why you find them at your local stockist.

Make sure you pack the new ones with grease in the right places to repel water in the future
