Hi all, looking for a bit of guidance. Haven't posted in here for a while but i'm having another issue with the gp.

The power steering has cut out on me 4 or 5 times now and just wondering if anyone could offer any help as to what I could do next. The steering has been creaking for a little while now which I assumed was the top mounts from reading on here. But more recently, the power steering just randomly cuts out. Only done it at slow speeds while the steering has been creaking, I can feel the vibration in the steering wheel and then the waning light comes on the dash and the power steering dies.

Not sure if the slow speed thing is just coincidence or not but any guidance would be appreciated. I'm hoping its not going to be something ridiculously expensive. Thanks in advance :)

Thanks, I'll have a check in the morning but surely that wouldn't cause the power steering to cut out?

I were speaking to someone from a garage the other week, somehow come into conversation about power steering and how sensitive it is etc(had problems on my mk2) He mentioned tyre pressure, so when mine went I got back turned it off and on and it went off and worked. Did my tyres in the morning and has been fine ever since...

Could be much more but just thought I'd put what I did here.

I have this issue, its currently in the garage as its turned into 103538958 different electrical issues, I'll let you know what he says about the Power Steering issue.

Thanks, I've had a number of electrical issues since getting the car but was hoping this may be something simpler.

Just after buying the car it kept cutting out which turned out to be a loose MAP sensor. And more recently the engine temp warning kept coming on when staring the car but charging the battery seemed to solve that. Then there's this, seems to be when I'm entering/leaving the street at like 10mph or so.

Oh and the starter motor tends to squeal when starting when it's been left overnight but starts fine if it's been started a couple of hours previous. Don't know if it's linked at all, and could be the battery but just trying to give as much info as possible.

And the cars only got like 44,000 on the clock so wouldn't have thought it would be the power steering pump going or anything but I'm not exactly a mechanics expert haha

Phoned the garage and it's going in on Wednesday, hopefully they'll find out what the issue and sort it, and hopefully it's covered under the warranty

Did a bit of research this morning and I'm thinking it's more likely to be the steering column after reading a few old posts and stuff.

Check your tyre pressure, mine went the other night, turns out I had 16 psi in my front left.

This is unlikly to have been the cause.

OP, check your battery, might be worth putting it on charge over night to top it up, EPS will be the first thing to fail should the battery start to die.

How old is the battery?

Battery was charged over night like 2 week ago because the engine temp warning kept coming on when starting the car and I read it could be related to the battery and it hasn't happened since. Probably due a new one though soon.

And the cars booked in for Wednesday to hopefully be repaired under warranty.

Also I think the top mounts may need doing as there's a knocking from the front while driving and the wheel creaks sometimes when turning, generally at slow speed, how easy is this to do? Cause it won't be covered under warranty as it'll be classed as wear and tear right?

Thanks

Hi

I have posted a a guide on my trader post about GP steering issues, the vibration and eventual cutting out is typical of the torque sensor failing in your column. If you do need to do something about locating a replacement column, then I sell a reconditioned column with a lifetime warranty for £225 including delivery.
If you need some friendly help or advice then feel free to give me a ring here at western power steering 0117-9602906.

Ben..what was the problem in the end?! battery/oil light came on mine accompanied by a loud dynamo sound followed by intermittent power steering failure?
