Hi all, I have a GP 2009 1.2 8v. At the weekend it wouldn't start, was cranking and just starting but then cut out straight away, temperature gauge raised even though it was cold. Was taken to the garage, sods law the next morning when they started it it worked fine. Took it home and the next night it happened again. Back to the garage, they said it was the map sensor. So they ordered a new sensor from fiat, they said the sensor was £111 (not sure if this is before or after tax), but the total bill is £248, well that's a lot of labour cost considering they charge £48 per hour, even if the £111 was before tax, I thought these sensors were quite easy to fit? I do trust this garage and am not questioning whether it was the map sensor but this amount was just so unexpected. Thanks for any advice and excuse any typos I am on my kindle :)

I had mine fail on my 56 1.3 diesel multijet GP before Christmas. My garage charged me £135 all in. Diagnostics, new part and fitting.
Being of the non grease monkey type thought it was ok.

To be fair the RRP of the OEM sensor is about that mark

most garages charge a fixed rate for diagnostics And if someone had to be sent 20 miles to the dealership to pick the part up.. you'll soon clock up a couple of hours labour to cover their costs...

The Map sensor can be a bugger to diagnose the fault could be down to several things..

battery

earth strap

ecu earth

map sensor

coolant temperature sensor...

just hope they have managed to diagnose it correctly :)

Just picked the car up, turns out was £111 for the sensor, £35 for diagnostics, plus extra labour cost as the code was saying it was the water temperature sensor that was wrong however when they checked it it was fine, as was all the wiring ect, so they tested the map sensor which was giving a reading of 112 degrees. Plus vat of course. So clenched my teeth n paid up, have to say it did sting a bit! Thanks for everyone's advice :)

you could have bought a laptop, set of leeds a paid version of mes and a bosch map sensor for that money.

Pretty sure Leeds would cost more than £230 mate.

Anyways given this is such a common fault I'd have just bought the part off ebay and attempted it myself. If it works great, if not then thats the chance you take.

Shop around buddy for a good garage.

I failed MOT today.

MOT testing place quoted me £350 for 2 new tyres and front coil, including labour.
Another garage quoted me £350 for 4 new tyres and 2 front coils, including labour.

Ridiculous!

Permission to look smug? ;-)

Least they did all the tests

Sometimes people criticise Fiat dealers.. but their diagnosis is often quicker simply as they know the cars inside out :)

Despite the massive bill I am glad I had it done properly rather than buying a cheap part and diy'ing it, for a start it would have been the temp sensor I would have been replacing rather than the map so the problem wouldn't have been fixed anyway, and at least the part is guaranteed. And yes Andy permission granted haha.

Remember when. Getting quotes to ask exactly what parts they are fitting in the case of tyres one might quote like for like if you have say Bridgestone b250's on (original fit on early 15" wheel gp's ) they could well be £30 more than the cheapest brand x ditch finder tyres each...

Likewise some garages will fit OEM fiat springs others will quote for cheaper pattern parts.... Ask before spending

Buy the Bosch part from the right place, not expensive. ;)
