Hello ladies and gents,

I've been hanging around the forums for a few months now, reading up on stuff and doing my research whilst I've been in the hunt for a cheap commuter and shopping trolley, but staying mostly quiet whilst having nothing to add to discussions, but now its time to ay Hello :)

Well, as of yesterday I am the new owner of a 1 previous owner 2007 Grande Punto 1.3 M-Jet 5-door 75Bhp with supposedly full service history.

After looking at and driving 4 different Grande Punto's during the past week, I was left with the distinct impression that these cars are mostly much unloved and just used until various maintenance and other jobs are overdue, then traded for a new motor at the main stealers, which dully pass these trade-ins to the second hand traders who then talk up a good advert with little to no evidence to back up their claims. Well, this car is no exception on the surface on general inspection.

With that said, the car had received the recommended 18K, then 36K, then a 4K later 58K service, according to the available dealer receipts but no log book and no stamps. The car now sits at 79.5K with no evidence of any servicing after the 58K service.

As bought the car needs the following:

4 new tyres (current tyres look like they are the original 4 tyres supplied as new).
Front discs and pads (also look like the factory fitted discs at least, as they have 4mm of pitting on the outside and more on the inside).
Rear shoes at least (both rears spin but snag at certain parts of their rotation).
Broken glove box release handle (held closed with a bit of female hair band and clip lol).
Broken and completely missing passenger side sun visor (all other cars had the drivers side inner clip broken of the sun visor, suggesting rough handling or just a weak part).
Heated rear screen, AC and ? buttons slightly recessed from fascia and not working unless the fascia is pressed down with one hand then the other hand used to turn-on and turn off the functionality of said buttons.
Slight judder from the Dual mass flywheel, although clutch bite is almost at the bottom of the pedal travel.
Stiff gear selector and not every gear can be selected without forcing the stick or having a couple of attempts to get it in second and third and reverse.
Obviously a full engine and gearbox oil service, air filter and pollen filter service, along with brake fluid service during the brake maintenance.
Air-con re-gas (works but not very cold, no leaking pipes at least). :)
A couple of Front and rear light bulbs.
Broken unlock button on keyfob, (the other two work fine).
Needs taxing and apparently the MOT will be due soon (still waiting for paperwork to arrive).
A number of scratches on the paintwork in various places, with the NS rear quarter of the rear bumper having taken a proper scuff (luckily no dents that are noticeable on the car overall).
Ohh and the steering wheel looks like a squirrel has been nibbling at it.......

The irony of course is the dealer advertised the car as IMMACULATE, FULL SERVICE HISTORY, 1 FEMALE OWNER CAR, JUST SERVICED, and of course asking a premium for that year and spec car. (n)

When I went to view they were quite surprised I turned up with a flash light a rag and spent a good 40 minutes looking over the car before I took it out for a drive. Suffice it to say, they had only just collected the car from a main stealer 48Hrs ago where the lady owner had traded for a new car, so they couldn't even produce all of the documents and the V5 as this was still at the stealer, never mind quantifying when they managed to service the car between picking it up and my inspection

Whilst I paint a pretty grim picture above, I bought the car because despite being rough around the edges and less than loved over the past 3+ years, the car is mechanically sound overall and a gem waiting to be re-polished after only 2 years of ignorance, as such the turbo is sound as is the gearbox and AC compressor. The chain tensioner doesn't clatter, which is more than I can say for the other 3 GP's I saw and drove in different parts of the country in the 2.5K-3K price range. What is clear is that a 3K doesn't buy you much these days

Everything above will be addressed in due course, starting in order of priority to get her road and MOT legal and I hope some of the non maintenance items with some help from here

Apologies for the lengthy post from a newbie, I hope I haven't bored any of you! I will update you with developments and pictures in due course.

For now I would like to ask only one question........I received only 2 keys from the seller with little suggestion that there is more coming from the main stealer. One of the keys is the multi function keyfob and the other is a plain simple black or dark blue fiat branded key with no buttons. What I would like to know is, how to identify if I have the "master" code key in my possession? Can somebody please provide me with some feedback in that regard or an image of said key? I would really like to have a new multi function key fob programmed at the stealer (or anywhere else that can do this), in order to regain access to remotely unlock the car. This is my biggest area of concern in terms of cost overall. :(

best regards, Humour

P.S. this might be just the commuter but I have every intention to have this car returned to its former glory and modify in places too of course :yum:

I see newbies are treated to the same warm welcome as other boards :p

More documents arrived today which confirms MOT is also out by about 20 days and the V5 states the second and current owner is a man (or a boy lol), so not quite 1 owner car, which explains a few things......never mind, in for a penny in for a pound etc.

New K&N filter arrived today, Discs and pads and new Vredestein all season rubber on route. Should have the new tyres and tracking done on Saturday and the rest of the servicing on Tuesday at my mate @ aforalfa.co.uk in Aylesbury followed swiftly by an MOT hopefully ending the day with a new ticket, after which I can Tax her and start rolling. (y)

Aztec Motor Company in Croydon, a bunch of cowboys, but aren't they all......

Hi Humour welcome to the forum mate and welcome to the GP family.

In terms of the keys the multifunction key is the master key and the other which is just a key is the slave. Have you tried putting in the master key and turning to mar and pressing the lock button on the key? (I could be wrong but I am sure I read something/somewhere along these lines and if I am wrong please someone else correct me).

Sounds as though you have a bit of work ahead of you in terms of getting your GP all sorted :)

Looking forward to see how you get on and the progress in pictures mate, we are all suckers for pictures on the here LOL :D

Regards
Stephen

I have an '07 1.3 m-jet myself. It drives well and gives good mpg. I have had quite a few gremlins with it which I can mostly attribute to "oversights" but its previous owner. I've since put most of them right and am enjoying the car now. :)

Just one thing I picked up in the above. Your car does not have a dual mass flywheel and if a fault has been attributed to being a DMF issue then the diagnosis is wrong.
If you have a judder when pulling away then its either the lower stabiliser mounting or the clutch itself.

Those engines have a mixed reputation but if it has been looked after and you in turn do the same, then there's no reason why it be relatively trouble free. Initial lag apart, they do perform quite well.

Thanks for the replies SJB and Skyperr. :D

@ SJB, will get pics as soon as poss mate. Will definitely show it in its current poorly state! I'm also a member of an Alfa Romeo forum and know all about hounding newbies for pics. (y) The key issue is that the unlock button is "swollen" and does not positively click when depressed, so I think its a case of physical damage to the button as opposed to and issue with the RF on the key. The other two buttons on said key work fine. ;)

@ Skyperr, very glad to see another member with the same car I can quiz(?) on occasion. :D Interesting to also hear, but equally confusing based on other info I have read that the 1.3M-Jet doesn't use a DMF? In any case, this isn't a priority right now.

What I am currently trying to work out is what Oil grade and specification is required for the gearbox? The car is at 79.5K and based on its current condition and available paperwork, I doubt very much this has ever been touched, which I would want to rectify as part of the major service next Tuesday. Not having the owner handbook with the car is a real PITA as I have no reference about the maintenance of the car. A member here suggested in another post that the gearbox shares the engine oil and engine oil pan/pump as a source???

I would be very grateful if some light can be shed on the matter so I can provision the required parts for the major service next week and get as much done in one hit as possible.

Hum

P.S. @ Skyperr, Agreed on the lag, moving from a 12V 2.5L N/A Busso V6 to the little M-jet at junctions I now need predictive reaction in dropping the clutch as it takes a second or two to get going. lol

To answer your queries in the order raised:

The 75bhp 5speed multijet doesn't have a DMF. The 6speed 90bhp does.

The gearbox takes 1.8 litres of 75W/85 gearbox oil. This grade is somewhat unusual but I'd recommend you source the correct stuff. The gearbox does not share or use the engines oil.

I think you are doing the right thing changing the gearbox oil. The drain bungs are magnetic and if there is any wear inside the box, those magnets will attract the worn metal. The amount of swarf and metal gathered will be indicative of the extent of that wear

Thanks for the info Skyperr. :)

Under my current time constraints I've opted for the slightly more common 75W/90 Synthetic Triple QX gearbox oil for Tuesday's service just so I can have some fresh oil in there for a few months. In the spring I intend to change both engine and gearbox oils again and this time will have more time to get the recommended stuff acquired and put into the GP.

Hopefully I now have everything I need to get her serviced and MOT'd. I hope for no more surprises as its going to start to hurt lol.

Regards Hum.

Quick update on my M-jet.

The Grande Punto received the necessary service today and flew through the MOT. I was quite surprised how quickly emissions were passed (more used to old Alfa's needing some fettling to get through CO2 tests lol).

New tyres fitted on all four corners. Went from 175/65/R15 to somewhat butch 205/60/R15 (lol don't ask), but despite looking some what agricultural I quite like the look, looks almost like a 4x4 Panda. Tracking was also done of course.

The major service included, Front disks + pads, Rear shoes + drum fettling, bled with DOT4 Super blue including the clutch line. Engine Oil and filter change, gearbox oil change, air filter change (K&N panel) and the fuel filter change. Various light bulbs and white greased various components under bonnet and door hinges. All in all she feels pretty happy, or so she should be lol.

Also added an STP fuel additive to clean injectors along with a full tank of diesel.

All in I'm about 600 quid lighter, but she is now T&T'd and ready to roll starting in the morning.

I have noticed a broken O/S headlight lug, which will need replacing, but looking through the Bay and other pages, its not very clear which headlight replacements outside the OEM will be a direct replacement. Any ideas?

I would ideally like to fit HID's as I'm used to having them on my 155 and these feel like little candles now its getting dark pretty early, but I'm not sure if its safe to fit HID's on headlights not utilising lenses?

The 06-08 'square' remote keys are all like this with the puffed up unlock button. If it really irks you, and chances are the button will have worn somewhat over the years with normal wear and tear, you can get replacement key cases for under a tenner from everyone's favourite online auction website, and transplanting innards from one key to the other is surprisingly simple :)

Thanks for confirming this Cadabena. I had spotted said auction, but wasn't sure if the issue was related with the case or the innards.

These key come uncut, presumably I can take them anywhere to cut them to my original key before I strip it and swap over?

Yes, it bugs me I cant unlock the car with the keyfob :D Also having lived with Italian cars most of my life, I know that during the winter months, key locks can get frozen and one cant get in the car on a cold morning without messing about, which I would prefer to avoid ;)

No need for cutting - just use your old blade and PCB ;)

Bought a replacement keyfob case from the Bay which appeared to be of good quality as well as 3 dip switches from another vendor and tried getting the key replaced today.

Lets just say the non OE keyfob case is a load of pish. It's a badly injection moulded copy of the OE part and it was impossible to rebuild the key to normal operation, despite shaving bits off plastic off with a scalpel.

On the bright side, the unlock dip switch that was damaged was replaced at my work with one of the three acquired and when I re-assembled the bits into the OE case after a little clean up......PRESTO I now have a key that unlocks the car......RESULT! Even if the OE case is a bit tatty and battle scarred, it works so it will do for now.

The dip switches cost me no more than £5 quid, so that was a pretty cheap fix. (y)

Shame about the knock off Nigel keyfob case. (n)
