Hello everyone,

Wonder if anyone can help. I have a 2006 Fiat Grande Punto 1.2, with 47k on it. I've now owned it for two months, however am experiencing ever worsening problems with my steering.

I find, when stationary, or at low speeds, when I turn left any amount from a few mm, to full lock, I get quite a loud vibrating noise/grinding noise from both inside and outside the cabin, and the steering column vibrates quite considerably, and from the outside, you can also feel the wheels physically vibrating when turning left. I get no warning lights on the dash, the power steering never fails, and it's probably also important to note, when turning right, there is no problem what so ever. Even from full left lock. I haven't had any problems so far other than the noise and vibrations, but am a little worried about it. I don't really want it to fail when I'm on the motorway or something. I'm on my fifth fiat in six years, and this is the second to cause problems now.

I know they have been recalled for steering problems, but when contacting fiat, they have told me it has already been done on my car. I have had a few mechanics have a look at the car, but they are unable to fault and are clueless, and suggest there is no point throwing parts on the car at great cost unless they know what's wrong. (Which I was quite surprised and happy about :) ) But obviously doesn't help much!!

Has anyone experienced similar issues or have any idea what's wrong?

Thanks in advance for any help

Chris

If you get someone to turn the wheel while you hold the spring, does the spring vibrate? try both sides. If it does, top mounts need doing, do both sides together.

Also check drop links/anti roll links. They may not be broken or have excessive play in them but i had a similar issue recently, took the wheel off and loosened the drop link off. it turns out the head that rotates/moves with the steering had seized and therefore rattled like hell at low speed. As it had only seized it could have been missed by the mechanics? Again check both sides (and both ends of the roll bar for that matter)

Iv just had the same problem with mine mate, iv got a 1.9 multijet, had the grinding noise when stationary or driving very slow, its gets worse and worse over time. eventually my power steering started to fail when driving or when first starting the car. I had a quote from a garage to get it repaired at £480 including labour, the mechanic there said it was the power steering motor.

Lucky enough for me i took it back to the dealer i had it from and he did it for me under warranty, he said that he ended up changing the whole power steering column!

Major fault on these Grande Puntos.
