I have a 2008 Grande Punto, with the 90ps 1.3 Multijet diesel.
Does it have a timing chain or belt ? A search on this site says timing chain, but my local mechanic and the Fiat Australia service book say timing belt.

I only ask because the car although 5 years old it has only done 24,000miles and according to the service manual is say the timing belt should be checked every 4 years.

My mechanic says the belt should be changed, including water pump as the car is now 5 years old, at $1150 (aust) to do the work, I don't want to do it unless I have to, but of of course I don't want to have the belt/chain jump and damage the motor.

They have a chain here in the UK.

It should have a chain, (my service book suggest it has a belt) but all 1.3 multijet engines have a chain. Water pump is also separate and external to the block so doesn't need changing either.

Thanks everyone,

The service dept. at the original selling dealer confirmed it had a timing chain (and unless rattling no need to replace chain) and the $1150 aud quoted is about what it costs for the timing belt/water pump on the 1.9l diesel.

Although Fiat Australia said it might have a belt because, in Australia our engines are unique ! somehow I think not.
