Technical Engine whirring

Hi all,
In my GP 1.9 sporting I'm having a small issue at the moment but it is bugging me.

When engine braking (more noticeable in lower gears) I get a whirring noise. but when I press the clutch or accelerate it goes away? Any ideas would be very kindly appreciated please, apart from that no other issues at all.

Many thanks,

Mark

Hi Mark!

Any news yet on what's causing this whirring noise?

I have a 2000 punto 1.2 8v with the exact same symptoms as you. The whirring sound usually shows up:

1. After the car's been left alone for at least a day.
2. When it's cold weather (<10 ºC).
3. While driving ONLY (accelerating + free run).
4. Between 2000-3000 RPM.
5. In neutral, 1st and 2nd gear.
6. Only during the first 2 minutes after start up ( accelerating 4 to 5 times).

Note that:
1. The tone of the noise changes according to the RPM.
2. Noise does not show up when revving while stationary.
3. Noise disappears when clutch pedal is pressed.

Any update/help would me much appreciated!!

Martijn

Mine was the gearbox unfortunately mate, from your symptoms it sounds like yours is too, I've since sold up and got a fiesta st500, as I didn't fancy paying out for a new box,

Thnx for your quick reply Mark and congrats with your new car. My car just got through its MOT, so the plan is to make this year its final year.. Right now it's not making the noise, as summer is coming up, so hopefully it'll last till next winter.

Thnx again!

Have you changed the gearbox oil, that might well cure it, it might even be low on gearbox oil,

I had the gearbox oil changed already a while ago during its big maintenance at the dealer. Later, the dealer also diagnosed the gearbox had a (non urgent, not a big deal they said) leak, due to the gasket. In order to treat this issue they tightened the bolts of the box.

Thus there is a chance it might be low on oil. I even asked the dealer last week, could this noise indicate that my gearbox is low on oil?? They kept assuring me like: "no sir, you would hear a metalish noise and especially during shifting.." I asked them to investigate so they have driven it, however they couldn't find anything. On top of that, my car hasn't been making the sound recently, I think due to the warmer weather in Holland right now.

Btw, I forgot to mention that the whirring sound always showed up in combination with lack of power, as if the car had to cross over a small hill before it finally took off..

During the MOT this week, the dealer also discovered a faulty MAP sensor. I replaced it myself last night and hooked up the car to my laptop. Pressure readings are healthy now, and the error is gone. This problem might have been responsible for the loss of power.. we'll see.

I'll have the gearbox oil level checked tomorrow.

What level was your gearbox oil mate?

Gearbox oil level turned out to be fine. Dealer told me there is really nothing to worry about. They also said they hardly ever had a punto 188 coming in with a broken or worn out gearbox. They said it will last long unless being rigorously "stirred" or unless you keep your hand on the gear shifter all the time while driving.

Quick update on the whirring noise:
I have replaced my map sensor with a spare from a scrapper and since then the whirring noise hasn't come up anymore. The poor acceleration performance side-effect is also gone. So far, it seems like my symptoms were caused by the faulty map sensor.

Attached below u find a graph of my intake manifold pressure while idling and throttling:

Idle pressure: 290 mbar

The replaced map sensor seems to work fine. Also the 'pressure sensor' error in the ECU is gone now.

So to conclude:
All seems to be fine for now.

Nevertheless I'll still keep an eye out on my oil levels given your experiences, as well as many others in our Fiat community.

Thnx for the support mate!
