I am starting to believe these Orange puntos are cursed.... My engine completely failed after 4 months so after a 2k rebuild everything has been fine until this week when I took it to the garage for a suspected nsf wheel bearing which thankfully turned out to be a track rod end :) however they also told me my gearbox was very noisy so I believe I am now about to face the impending doom off total gear box failure :mad::mad: which I believe some off you have already suffered?? Any ideas peps? I haven't got another 2k for a gearbox... Is this a common fault with gp's?

I assume we are talking about a 1.9m-jet? If so its a very common problem, the bearings of the m32 gearbox fitted to your car are made of cheese. There are a million threads on here covering the subject but to give you a rough idea rebuilds cost about £800+. I did read one recent thread where a chap found a Vauxhall specialist (its a Vauxhall gearbox) who could change the bearings without stripping the whole thing apart for about £400-500.

Hi mate surprising it's the 1.4 Tjet... And I've seen some threads about the 1.9mjet but not mine, so thought I'd ask for some help :) do you know if it's the same box in the 1.4 Tjet? It just about to hit 80k so it hasn't done bad if it's the original I suppose just I've never had such a unlucky Car  still looking at a fair bit then.... Wouldn't mind a six speed abarth box if it would fit??? Should I get it repaired asap or just let the box die as I am low on the cash side at the mo??

Ah, that's unusual, the t-jet 5 speed boxes don't usually give trouble. I've heard of the diffs going on lowered cars, could the noise be coming from the diff?

I'd avoid the abarth 6speed box, its the dreaded m32 (though it does seem to cope better when coupled to a petrol engine).

No it is not a whining noise it's just clunky and loud really, am going to ask them to look at it further Friday just afraid of what they may say.... So it is possible to put a 6 speed box in? Is it a straight swap? I'm not lowered yet either

It does cope better on petrol as that's what it seems to be designed for. It's the torque output of the Mjet that's stuffing them up.

So is it worth putting one in if I need a replacement gearbox? I find the ratios in the 5 speed useless, do you know it is a straight swap? I can't understand why they would put the 5 speed in when the 6 speed would be much better all round?
