Hello all. I have been lurking on these forums for a couple of weeks and picked up some great tips such as adding MP3 capabilities using a cheap cable!

However, the car developed a strange noise which is almost identical to this 274725-strange-whirring-noise-06-plate (not able to post the link directly; less than five posts). I bought the car two weeks ago with 54,000 miles on the clock. It is a 1.2 Active and in great condition. I started the car up to go to work today and heard a bizarre whirring. I initially thought someone was mowing their lawn! I noticed that when I pressed the accelerator the whirring increased and decreased when allowed to return. The noise remained in all gears but disappeared after about 1/2 a mile.

I am quite confused what it could possibly be. Any ideas?

do you have air conditioning?

chances are it could be one of 3/4 things... Old AUX belt (rubber goes hard thus noisy) open bonnet with car ticking over lightly drizzle a bit of water on the belt avoiding the alternator does it go quiet? if so its likely the belt if the noise remains chances are its one of the following:

Dying alternator bearings..

IF AC fitted also:

Dying air con pump bearing

Dying Belt tensioner / bearing

Or cam belt tensioner... has the cam belt ever been changed?

Thanks for the reply Andy. Unfortunately there is no air conditioning so at least we can rule that. I'm currently at work so I will check the AUX belt when I get home.

I don't believe the cambelt has ever been changed, will it show visible signs of wear as well as the alternator belt tensioner?

Just got home and poured a little water on to the belt and it didn't make any difference, but having said that, there was no noise when I started it up to return home.

There is a video YouTube (KWo9JIWx8BY) which sounds similar to mine as it is now but not as loud nor as high pitched.

No ac so no aux belt tensioner ;) the aux belt is pulled tight using the alternator slotted bolt holes.

It would be worth getting both belts done new cam tensioner.. and waterpump (which I forgot to mention yesterday)

How much can I expect to pay for the three jobs (cam belt, aux belt and water pump replacement)?

Depends on the garage factor 3 to 4 hundred

There should be no charge to fit aux belt if having cam belt done as it needs to come off

Parts

Cam belt kit about 60 pounds
Water pump about 20
Aux belt about 10
Rocker gasket about 10
Antifreeze about 10

Use decent garage ideally a fiat dealer or via fiat /Alfa as specialist as the cars computer needs to "be told" it's got a new belt on

Hi all. My apologies to bring this back up but since my last post, the car never made any noise until today. I haven't used the car for two days then jumped in to go to work. Immediately the noise started again and was really loud. Furthermore, another issue arrived when I turned the steering wheel left; there was a loud screeching sound that disappeared as soon as the steering wheel was turned back (the car was stationary at this point). As per usual, the noises disappeared within 1/2 mile.

I haven't been able to get to a garage just yet due to buying some alloys and tyres but hoping to get booked in next week. Are the two issues related or just coincidence?

Hi, I was wondering if you ever got this sorted? My 1.2 GP makes the whirring noise when I accelerate as well. I recently got my timing and aux belt changed though and it has started since then. Could the aux belt be too tight?

Dear Apollo565.

My apologies for the very late message but for the sake of completion and help in supporting other members who find this form, I will answer as best as I can.

I took the car in to a trusted mechanic and replaced the cam belt, water pump, aux belt as well as the alternator as it was shot to pieces. Since then, the noise never came back.
