A newbie to Fiat Forum, trying to help my brother who bought a Grande Punto 1.4 8V Active Sport 57 plate (57k miles) from a main dealer garage that should appear in the "to avoid" section.

Anyway sent the car to my independent (5 stars) to discover, (apart from the timing belt needing replacing), that the sump is leaking in fact is porous. The garage owner told me this is quite common, has anybody heard or experienced that?

Its going to cost £200 to replace, plus the timing belt at £268, so basically a good day all round.

Any comments?

Regards,

The sump was more of an issue on the older mk2/2b punto's with the 1.2 8v engine (basically the same engine) have never heard of it happening on a grande

One of my friends has the 1.4 8v and his sump is fine, also he had his timing belt/water pump and aux belt done last week for £200

Hope this helps

Hi,
rusty steel sumps is relatively common on the Mk2 punto, :(

so with age it's not a huge leap to expect the GP's to be prone ..!!,

although I'm suprised you didn't notice it before buying if it's that bad,

57 though? Unless it is high mileage (lots of travelling on gritted roads) or exposed to salt water it's unlikely the sump would be 'pourus'?

Know my 06 plate was well pitted when I part exed it about 2.5 years ago one of my jobs before winter is to get the rustolium out on my EVO

Hi,

assuming were are still talking about a painted Mildsteel sump pan, ( NOT a cast alloy one),
it's damaged paint that exposes the metal that then rusts, so prevention IS enough in this case,

BUT once it's leaking ( rusted through) a new pan is the only long-term option,

NOT a major ( or expensive) job, just messy..!!, :yuck:

I have a 07 plate Grande Punto, which had a corroded sump. Was leaking like the Exxon Valdez. Speaking to a lot of folk about this, and they say it is quite common. Not enough rust prevention from the factory. I replaced it myself 2 weeks ago. Pig of a job, very messy. I was getting quoted between £300-350 from local garages to replace. I got my timing belt replaced at 72k miles. (This is in the FIAT service handbook) Of course getting it done before you hit that mileage is probably wise. Cost me £189 for a belt change.
