Hi all,

I have a very loud clunking/rattle which seems to be coming from under the steering wheel/near the pedals (that's where it sounds like its coming from anyway).
The rattle happens under strange conditions and they are:

When accelerating at between 60-80mph in a high gear (5th or 6th).
The sound will stop if the steering wheel is turned fractionally and also if the foot is let off the accelerator or if I brake at all. (If I freewheel at 60-80mph there's no noise)
I have had tyres checked and balanced wheels as well as tracking checked. I don't think it would be the wheel bearing either as there is no play.

I have been having this problem for a while now and it is very agitating especially on the motorway as it falls within the 60-80 speed range :(

Any ideas please, I would much appreciate them,

Thanks,

Mark

Not sure if your car will have it but check your subframe brace, underneath just behind the engine. The metal is so soft you can bend it, make sure its not touching the exhaust as tbe exhaust sits over the top of it!

it will look like the longer one here but wont be forge.

Yeah it's not that mate, thanks anyway though, also not the anti roll bar link as its still rattly today :( any other ideas anyone please?

The symptoms you're suggesting does sound like a wheel problem, do you have a standard wheel ?
Other things to check.

Check the brake caliper, and that the pads are not missing any anti rattle shims etc.
Maybe also consider a CV joint could be on it's way out.
With a CV joint, i'd expect to hear some clunking at really slow crawling speeds with full steering lock.

For extra piece of mind, please get this checked out.
