General Changing tie rods

Hi ff!

I've tried to search but I'm on my phone and the box comes up and disappears can't find anything on google either..

Anyway, since buying my car it's had a faint clunk going over bumps which seems to be both sides but more on the left. MOTd it last month and it had an advisory for the inner steering rack joint which I assume is the inner tie rod (the bloke that tested it wasn't around when I picked the car up)

Anyway.. How are they to do? Any special tools needed .. Is it one of those jobs you might aswell pay a garage with a nice ramp to sort?

you talking about the anti roll bar links....

open ended combination spanner and a socket set.. (17mm i think but i could be wrong)

rather than the alan key the spanner holds the link to stop it rotating on the gp

Or do you mean track rod end?.....what does it actually say on the advisory (code) ?

Tie rods, I've ordered one from euro car parts since they had a promo running at the weekend

Also.. No code as far as i know on the advisory sheet just "slight play on inner steering rack joint" I'll double check later

Inner steering rack joint won't be tie rods.

What else could it be?

A quick google search brought up a tonne of threads by people who got the same advisory.. Play in an inner steering rack joint / inner tie rod. Can't think what else it could be?

Rang the garage and he remembered the very low black punto lol! Inner tie rods as I thought.. So back to the original Q.. Has anyone changed one? Looking at part it doesn't look like it would cause much drama.

Easy enough, Just remember how many turns / mark it up so it goes back on relatively near to where It was for tracking purposes lol.

excellent so apart from the usual it's no majour drag? (i'm on about the inner tie rod mind) some of the threads on french tat i was reading saying you need all sorts of special gizmos.

If its your inner track rod you just need to take outer tie rod of count the turns you'll need mole grips to take inner one of remove dust cover first then place new rod next to old one and check length then put new one on and cable tie dust cover easy job good luck

excellent cheers, from what i can work out the cars that need special tools are ones that need the ball joint seperating in order to fit.

the part i ordered is the same on as in your link and is all one unit, cheers for the reply

Well 2 years on and I finally changed it, no chance was it coming off with mole grips so I stuck some weld on the ball joint to get it off with a spanner.

Sorted the clunk.. Finally!

Too right, don't think I could have got it off with the mole grips.. Hit my hand off the subframe which is when the welder came out lol
