Hi there,

Basically I'm interested in what my next (Logical) step should be. I am looking to improve the general performance of the car. At the moment I have a cat-back and a gsr induction kit on my t-jet. I have been looking through threads to find out some answers about a turbo upgrade but it's confused me more! Can anyone tells which is more beneficial and why!? Ie. VL36/8, garret/ss etc. Also would that even be the best way to go or should I look at other mods first? All feedback welcome regardless of how stupid you may think it sounds! When it comes to cars I have limited I knowledge so please keep it simple :)!

Thanks
Leon

There are loads of old threads but they are pretty confusing.

In a nutshell the turbo's that fit:

VL36 - from Abarth Grande/bravo 150
VL38 - from Abarth 500/Mito 155

Both are a straight swap using the original manifold and will give similar gains but will need a remap to get the best out of them.

The Garrett unit out of the GP esseesse needs a lot of other mods such as new manifold, injectors, boost sensors and so on.

The TD05 turbo from old imprezas will fit with a custom manifold and remap but very few people have done that conversion.

Thanks for the reply!

Ok so that's the difference's but what would be the benefit of each? I read somewhere about boost, bhp, spoofing etc? Which would be the most beneficial? And would a turbo be our next choice of upgrades?

A turbo upgrade is probably the next step if you just want to improve power.

The VL36 will give you around 170-180bhp, it is then limited by the stock injectors and boost sensors.

The VL38 boosts from lower and people seem to get slightly lower BHP figures from what ive seen but this is only 5BHP or so which could be down to the accuracy of rollers.

The esseesse turbo with all the associated mods would give 180-210bhp mapped but I wouldn't bother with all the effort tbh, would be cheaper to buy a faster car.

I have a VL36 which will be going on my car soon.

Remember that any increase in power will need attention to the brakes and handling and above all driver skill and attitude :)

Ahh thank you! That helps! What about an inter cooler though? Much point before or after a turbo?
My intention would be to upgrade the turbo then use an 'angel tuning package' if you look on their site, they offer a fast road pack.. Looks like good value! Www.angeltuning.co.uk/fiat-grande-punto-1.4-tjet-tuning.aspx what do you reckon?!

A larger intercooler will give you peak torque for longer, can be done before or after the turbo but will obviously give better results after a turbo upgrade.

The angel tuning package is good but i would check if they can do a custom map to allow for a turbo upgrade or if its a generic map for the standard tjet

Ah okay, I shall enquire! So would you suggest, turbo -> intercooler -> custom map? Also with the more power will I loose mpg?

Generally, if you use the power you'll loose out on mpg, But it also depends on where you drive and how you drive.

You might find that a bigger turbo puts the package into a zone where everything is more efficient. Daft example is my Volvo T5, where in urban conditions it will struggle to do 12mpg, on a not exactly hanging about motorway trip, it'll see 35mpg. In contrast, under the same conditions, my old Turbo Cinq would give less than 30mpg.

Ah I see! I'm not aallllll about power but it's always nice! With a custom map I'm assuming they can fine tune it to a good balance?

Don't use angel tuning all I ever hear is bad things about them. I have the vl38 turbo, forge actuator, forge intercooler, forge intake, powerflow cat back and tune4performance custom map.

So what you wanna know? Lol

Oh really? How are they bad? What made you chose the 38 over the 36 and what kind of stats are you getting atm?

Because they are quite similar turbos plus the vl38 I got with no miles on for £200 off a mate on here.

I had the turbo put on 1 year and a half a go with only having the forge intake and ran 167bhp

Now I have the actuator, intercooler and exhaust done so should run 175-180bhp. I really need to get the car back on the rolling road.
