Welcome to the M32 gearbox club. Lol, mine as many others is the same. That'll be the bearing that sits on top of gear six then. My advice is, just have your own refurbished with the new upgraded bearings. Don't buy a secondhand one, it might be the same as yours is now.

Regards.

Mine whines when i lit of the accelerator and cruise in either 5th or 6th, is this the same problem?

Hmm, no, mine just whines and now grinds when booting it. That said, there are different faults, still all connected to the bearings. Does your gear lever flick back in either 1st 3rd or 5th?

If I just rest my hand on the gear lever and accelerate it does kick back a bit but my mums 147 has always done this so assumed it was normal .

Sounds like diff...

Is this normal? Its done it ever since I've owned it from what I can remember.

To be totally honest, I'm getting lost now with all the different stories from others. I was td by a gearbox specialist that the gear lever kicking back is an early sign of the bearing on its way out.
I would suggest you take it to a reputable gearbox repair shop and see what they think. I have my suspicions as to what they'll say though.

The GP gear stick should not move by much at all when it is healthy.

The 147 stick moves all over the shop when it is healthy.. Dont use that as a guide.

The sign of a failing GP 6 speed box is a whine. Normally starts in 6th or 5th. A distinct hight pitched almost like a radio controlled car.

You know then that the bearings are on the way out.

Just google search m32 gear box and read the ones that pop up on the various Vauxhall sites its the same gear box

My gear leaver moves in all gears and its been doing it since I got the car but I thought it was the norm
The only thing I'm worried about is getting mine done is what if the internals are naffed and it can't be repaired because the gearbox man said it does happen and my mech had the same problem in his vauxhall van with the same 6 speed box and when he went to repair it the casing inside was cracked so he had to find another box anyway which cost more in the long run so I'm at a delimma

So would any m32 gearbox bolt straight on to our fiats ?
If I got a vauxhall m32 box would that go straight on

This sounds exactly like my punto, the 'racing car sound' started in 1st, stopped using that gear, sound moved to 2nd. Glad to have noticed this thread. I also have a sound comparable to metal plates rubbing in 5th and 6th whilst off the accelerator any thoughts on this? cars in the garage with typical EGR issues. Also iv noticed previously my gearstick seems to flick back too.

I've had a proper result, found a local guy from me on eBay and he is rebuilding my box for £400 without taking the box off:slayer:
He used to work for vauxhall but does stuff from home with a proper ramp and he showed me a bucket full of bearing he has done over time from vauxhall to fiats.Once that's done the car is getting sold as I've never had so many problems on one car like I have with motor and its put me off ever getting another punto (n)disappointed to say the lease

Weird, not sure how long they last with failing bearings.

Did you not pick it up at the test drive? Any sort of whine/crunch/slip/kicking out of gear = RUN AWAY.

Didnt really notice it on test drive. Its more like a slight whistle than a whine tbh. Theres no slipping or crunching at all and it has never jumped out of gear. I'll keep a close eye on it and look out for the other symptoms.

DRUE1, any chance you could give us this mechanics contact number. My gear box is also knackered. Just bought car(07 punto 1.9 sporting) yesterday. Gutted.

Thankyou so much Chimera Gunner. WG Motorworks was awesome. Did it while I waited. Highly recommend if anyone has any drama's.
