Hi
I have been planning on taking the car for the summerholiday, going from Denmark to Italy. We have a 2006 Fiat Grande Punto 1.2, that have been running quite nicely the last 7 years. We have however only been driving in the more or less flat Denmark, so going through the mountains to Italy in an underpowered car has recently caused some concern.

So my question is, have any of you any experinece in driving so far and in such hilly conditions in a car with only a 1.2 litre engine, and will we be able to upkeep our normal driving pace at around 110 km/h at the highways?

Best regards
Jesper

No modern car has anything to fear, you will inevitably find yourself changing down earlier and reving it higher on the twisty mountain passes but the excellent Italian motorways are not steep. You will be in good company too, whilst the Italians make some seriously fast cars, they don't buy them. They all drive basic superminis with small engines and keep them bouncing off the rev limiter when they want to make progress.

I wouldn't worry about driving a 1.2, 65bhp is fine. Its not perfect but it'll get you up hills, you may have to drop some cogs but it'll go. Don't feel bad about using high revs, the engines are designed for it.
I potter about with 34bhp and keep up with normal traffic.
