Hoping someone can shed some light on this, when I'm sitting still or moving slowly, I get a sound from the steering wheel only when I turn left, and it's only when I'm turning it slowly

I'm not sure about adding videos on here but here's a link and sorry if I've done it wrong

Don't count on me, but im sure this is what causes the problem mate.

There's a 6 and 7 wire column motor though that you would have to find out which is your's, if you could get a back street garage or know a mechanic or a friend who even knows one it should save you money.

Just noticed that the 6 wire is plug and play, if yours the 7 wire it will need coded or if you send your own 7 wire they can repair that which shouldint need coded.

Been looking around at other fiat dealers aswell, cheapest including labour is around £680

Seen one on a fiat/alpha website for £200

It's a bank holiday so phoning around isn't really working :(

Very disappointing that FIAT haven't done a recall for this, it's a clear fault in the Grande.

My cars the same, I've lost powersteering a couple times now when starting the engine, luckily never when driving and get the same noise as the video above when turning at low speed.

Looks like it costs a about a quarter of the value of the cafr to fix too!:bang:

I agree, it is a clear fault and Fiat should have done a recall. (n)

A low car battery can also cause you to lose power steering now and then. Might not be in your case but just thought i let you know. :)

Cheers for the low battery info, ill have a look at that too.

I've actually gotten a quote to have it replaced for £350 and that's including labour from a local garage

I'm just worried about driving the car with the noise, don't fancy loosing steering while driving

Ill keep everyone posted on the final costs, but I'm hopefull about £350 as its half the price any fiat dealer have quoted

Just an update on the steering column, got it replaced today for £350, and the car feels like a completely different car.

The steering is soo much heavier an the car feels more rigid, I'd actually be interested in seeing how another GP steering feels in comparison, because mine is a 56 plate

It feels so strange driving lol has anyone else had theirs changed and came to the same conclusion?

Iv got a 1.9 multijet, has the exact same problem as the youtube clip posted above, vibration when stationary or going slow etc.

Was quoted £950 just for the parts by Fiat

A friend at a garage i know said he could do the job for £490 all in

Luckily i rang the dealership i had the car from and even though i was 1000 miles over my warranty they did the job with me just paying a £250 contribution. Got off lucky there, seems to be a common problem with these cars. Absolute nightmare. I drove round for about 3 months with the vibration and it obviously got a lot worse over time. Power steering kept failing all the time in the end. Anyone whos had this done knows what a nightmare it is!
