Hi

Can anybody tell me what the signs and symptoms are if your gearbox is either failing or about to fail?

I have recently bought a 2007 1.4 8v GP, and it might just me being paranoid but i feel like there's something not right with the gearbox.

So i was just wondering what some of the signs are? also if the gearbox was to die how much would i be looking at to replace it with a second hand/refurb??

Thanks in advance

From my limited knowledge, i'll say the clutch will go well before the gear box does.
Are there any responses that you get from the car that is making you suspect its the gearbox and not the clutch??

Well I can tell you a good way to know if the clutch is going...

Put it in second gear and just let the car roll on the idling engine - then floor the gas pedal. If the clutch slips, then the clutch is probably going (or atleast getting worn)...

(Some of the Gurus on here will probably come in to say what rubbish and utter bull I'm on about 8|

If its the gear change that doesn't feel right it might just be the cables need adjusting or replacing. If the gearbox is whining or grinding as you drive along in certain gears then it may need a re-build. This would be unusual on a 1.4 I think, we tend to only see stories of 1.9 diesels failing (but that could say more about the membership of this forum than about the cars).

Think you'd be looking at around £500 total fitted for a refurb replacement.

But why do you think it is failing? The 1.4 8v transmission is terrible, hard to get in to gears, reverse crunches, very jerky if not enough gas, even if there is enough gas 1st and 2nd are a nightmare.

So in short, unless it is jumping out of gear/grinding/seriously crunching I wouldn't worry.

I might sound like a bit of a crayon here, but how would i know if the clutch was slipping? what does it feel like??

Tbh there is no Real reason i think its failing, its just a little bit of a fight to get it in to gear sometimes... and im finding it hard to pull off correctly in first, it sort of judders or wheelspins.. but thats down to me lol!!

Also because ive read alot of the gearboxes go on the GP's!! i sppose its just me being paranoid because im sooo happy with this car that i dont want nothing to go wrong lol!!

Thanks for the help as always :) you guys are Tha Bomb ;)

Clutch slipping = like revving the engine not in gear. Big revs but no movement. I know that's like normal in the 1.4 8v (lol). ;)

Yes, as I said in my post it is difficult transmission.

That is the m32 in the MJETs, our one is fine.

Thanks mate very helpful, put my mind at rest :)!! the clutch is definitely not slipping although it feels a lot "springier" (if that's a word lol) than it did a few weeks ago.. or maybe its just me getting used to it!!

just so i know tho.. if the gear box was on its way out would it noticeable (the noises it would make)?

Yeah think it's you mate... Easy on the clutch release when pulling off/changing gears and you'll get a lit smoother. Also you don't need to rev above 2000 for you to get drive ;-)

Another tip that helped me was to watch videos on YouTube about how the whole engine, clutch, gears and drive system work... This helps you understand what's going on under all that pretty body work and dash... And also, what to expect to feel when either of those start to go...:)
