Hi,
I own a 2007 Grande punto 1.4 16v and during the winter i got the errors for ESP/ASR/Hill Holder/Check Engine, i know their are other threads addressing this but none seem to have an answer. At first i was told it was a faulty battery, which i replaced and worked for about 3 weeks. Their is a squeek coming from the engine bay which i suspect is a slack fan belt, does anyone know how to tighten this? Any help atall on this would be greatly appreciated as im starting to get annoyed with it.
Thanks

The fan is electric so no fan belt, might be alternator belt

Yeah but everyone still calls it a fan belt!

In my experience cars with aircon have a self tightening belt so no adjustment. You could try replacing the belt if it is squeaking.

It maybe that the alternator bearings are on the way out and putting excess drag on the belt causing it to slip.

Whilst the abs, esp and hill holder fault could be a wheel speed sensor, given that you have had battery issues I'd suspect it to be a charge issue. Its well known.

If it were me, I'd check the alternator is charging the battery (you can get kwik fit or halfords to do for you), and consider changing the belt.

Thanks guys thats given me some ideas. I forgot to mention a few things, the belt only started squeaking after i went through a big puddle of water. And the esp hill holder came on after the car had sat overnight in freezing temperatures. Thanks for all your help.

Ok so after a year and almost 5 different garages i have almost got to the bottom of this. Turns out the engine management , esp and asr errors were due to a faulty alternator and tensioner. However, i still have an error coming up for the hill holder being unavailable. It always comes on at start up and cant get rid of it, initially the computer says asr disconnected then seconds later "asr connected". Anyone have any ideas what this may be? Thanks! :)

Hi,
looking back at your original post.. it seems your unstable voltage supply = battery / alternator has flagged up various errors,
in the same way as a low battery on start-up can ping the air-bag sensors,

MES should show the supply voltage at various sensors..

I might be being very stupid here but what does MES mean? :s

Just a little update, I've had the car ecu scanned and it came up with a code for the clutch switch so I replaced it and cleared the code, however within 10 miles the error has returned took it back to the garage and they are pretty much stumped. Any more advice? I'm wanting to sell this car in the next month or so and would like the code cleared if possible. Thanks.

1. I've just read the whole thread, I'm surprised nobody mentioned a possible problem with the alternator ( until the garage). If you heard squeaks then possible belt or/and tenssioner at fault.

2. Change the garage.
It doesn't take a genius to change a switch.
That clutch switch is self adjusting (has a lever that gets sorter), You could readjust it with a pair of pliers in under 1 minute !!
That does not mean you have solved the issue. you need to check with something like MES if the signal from the switch goes all the way to the ECU ( MES has a parameter that shows what the computer is seeing -i.e. if the clutch is pressed)
If the ECU does not see the switch being pressed, then it's possibly a wiring/connector issue (or adjustment).

If after readjusting the switch everything is ok, but after a while it goes out of adjustment; This only means that the switch is adjusting in between points;
you simply have to grind/fie off a small bit of the adjustment lever ( just about 1-2 mm), then pull out the lever to the maximum length, and then try again.

The first part is correct, but i have to add a comment on the second part:
-MES will only show what is the voltage getting to the ECU; that does not mean that the correct voltage will be going to the sensors because there could still be bad sensor grounds, or bad connections, bad wiring, or even a bad ECU ( not able to drop down the 12v the ECU gets from the battery to a 5v needed by most sensors)
To see the voltage at the sensors, or sensor grounds you would still need a multimeter- a widely overlooked tool in today's hi-tech world of computer diagnostics.

p.s. Sorry for the double post!

Eh? I think you need to re-read the thread.

Hey mate,

Was just about to leave the Fiat Forum for the time being as I've traded in my 1.9 MJet Diesel 2006.

I had EXACTLY the same problem.

- On start up
- "ASR Unavailable"
- then... "Hill Holder Unavailable"
- then sometimes... "ABS Unavailable"

Also my radio was cutting out every now and then...

Spent about £200 reading into it with fixes.
It came up with the following faults.

- Radio switch faulty causing cutting out
- Brake switch faulty causing reverse light problems

I was quoted at garage that front right wheel speed sensor was faulty and causing this, this was not the case. It was faulty wiring form the OBD Computer in the glovebox area.
Quoting me about £2500 to repair initially, that coupled with my turbo sounding like it was going to blow up was about £3.5k worth of fixes.

...and people question why I traded in my GP for a Special Edition 2005 Vtec Honda Civic. Lol.
All the best, I'll check the forum from time to time, so hopefully you get it fixed. (y)
