Hi , im new to the forums so hello and also new to owning a Grande Punto. I got the car mid Dec 2012 and only use the car for short journeys around town and when I got the car it was doing around 33.7 mpg. On checking this again I noticed that it is now 28.2. I filled the car up on Saturday right to the top and only got 56 miles on the clock and I had used quarter of a tank of diesel. Does anybody know what figures I should be getting or what may be the problem? Thanks in advance

Too much boosting ;)

Well when I first got it maybe , but ive been driving it normally of late. So was just wondering if I needed to look out for anything really that may be wrong .

Hmm not really too sure really, I get similar to that whilst in traffic on normal 30mph roads, is it like that on motorways?

Don't really know as I'm only using it around town really, not actually been on a good run as yet. What sort of mpg are you looking at on a motorway run then if you drive at 70-80mph?

That might be the issue...lots of town driving. Does the car get up to temperature? Town driving in a diesel returns pretty poor economy.

Other things it could be would be EGR valve blocking up, ideally should take the car a good blast at temp to help clear it out. When was the car last serviced?

I noticed when i had my mjet i was getting circa 33/34 mpg, then i started doing more miles and bought a tuning box and was returning 44mpg (trip computer reading and working it out manually).

When was it last serviced as that could have an effect on your mpg,
also your tyre and the tyre pressures can drop the mpg.
I noticed a slight decrease in my mpg with different tyres.

around town and on short trips my average is between 38-41mpg
on the motorway it varies a little time to time on my travels
@50mph should get 60+ mpg
@60mph its around 50-60mpg
@70mph I get 50mpg
(figures from recent trip up to sheffield)
dunno if that helps to give you an idea, they do vary though as its only getting a reading through 50mph zones etc...

Well it was serviced and m.o.t'd when I bought it in Dec 2012. It's just had 2 new front tyres ( same tyres as were on ) due to a pothole bursting one.

Thread closed, really.

Ive had the same problem with mine changed the fuel filter and gave it a few decent motorway runs so to speak helped a little bit.

Since that ive fitted an italian speed tuning box and over the last week ive noticed a sustancual differance, i managed a full tank in 221 miles, thats how low my fuel economy was since runnin the box on it its gone up to 35 - 45 mpg dependin how hard i drive it

Short journeys around town is definitely your problem. I believe if you're only doing this sort of driving that you'd be better off with a petrol variant. Diesels only really better on longer commutes iirc?

Not only are you getting horrendous MPG, but you're also cutting the lifespan of your engine. Diesels are inherently inefficient when cold. Even my 1.3 diesel GP only does about 30mpg when going 1-2 miles. This however more than doubles when doing a 100 mile stint.

So, your mpg is to be expected. If you're only doing short journeys, get yourself a bicycle (y)

I suggest doing the basics. get some Isopropyl alcohol the liquid stuff, i think i got mine from maplins although chemist do have it, about 10 notes for 500Ml.. take your MAF off and put in in a small cup and leave it in it for half an hour with some isopropyl be careful if you use a cotton bud to remove any debris from the MAF.dry slowly with an air dryer or just leave it to self dry.
Mafs go out of spec ever so slowly and only a totally knacked one will show up by unplugging it. its cheap to clean and even though it might not be the only reason for your low mpg, it will make a difference if your MAF is 4 or 5 years old anyway......
good luck.

Hey mate, what reg is it? 2012 plate?
My 06 plate has some issues with the fuel gauge.
It's not really accurate as sometimes when I fill up, it would stay full for quite a long journey (30-40miles) then when I turn engine on the other side, I will have used 1/8 of a tank!

What spec is your punto?
