Technical ABs sensor issue

Technical ABs sensor issue

I rang them and asked them about the things suggested above. He said the wiring's fine, there's live getting to the sensor. He wants to change the ebaring because the magnetic strips at the bearing are peeling off?! Something like that anyway... Sounds like a reasonable explanation to me. At least he's not just throwing parts at the car and is actually doing some diagnostics.

The gargage does have a good rep.

Fingers crossed.

Well that would bring the ABS warning light on! Why didn't he/they say that to you from the start?

No idea, they were rushing to close, it was Friday afternoon! That's why I left thinking **** this could be a long expensive process. A bit more reassured now. We'll find out tomorrow...

Update:

No resolution as of yet. Had a new bearing fitted today, ABS sensor light went out but then he said the brake pedal was shuddering as if the ABS was kicking in when it shouldn't be.

Advised me to take it to a specialist and explain the situation.

He said as earth wire was corroded so he replaced that for me.

Charged me £40, nothing for bearing, just labour and the wire. Can't argue with that really they've spent some time on it today. I sat there while they worked on it for over an hour.

Thing is now, the specialist. I wanna tell them all but then I've laid my cards out, they know I'm stumped so can charge me anything they like! Whereas if I don't reveal much they may just fix it easily, or it may take them ages... and cost a lot. Ideas?

Cheers

I think your being a bit paranoid...key to any diagnosis is INFORMNATION. Give tech dealer as much info as you can so the tech can concentrate on other areas. Simply tel them you only want a hour spent on the car, should be easily diagnosed in that time(y)

Is light on now? Did garage fit bearing correctly?

The usual cause of this fault it the wiring just behind the ABS sensor connector corrodes away, sometimes this is easy to repair sometimes not so easy. Jack the corner of the car up and pull back the plastic sheathing for the ABS wiring if you can see a green/blue powder or if it looks cracked you have found the fault, sometimes this isn't obvious , if you are good with electrics and have a multi-meter you can check the wiring with the diagram on eLearn. I have sometimes has to replace the wiring right up to under the bonnet! As far as I'm aware Fiat don't do a wiring repair kit for this section of the loom so if the wire had broken right up to the connector I would try and find one in a scrap yard and cut the connector off (all 4 corners are the same just different wiring colours).

Hope that helps. :)

Ok, I'll tell them all. I'm pretty confident the guy has done all that. He changed the earth wire. The light is on now, but it's not no as soon as I start the car like it used to be, seems to come on after a few minutes of moving, different amount of time each time I drive it!

When you switch the ignition on the ABS carries out a self test (during the test the module will send a signal to each sensor and expect a response) if this test fails the ABS stays on.

If ABS light goes out then system ok but if it then comes on after driving then chances are it's a 'scrambled' signal and the module does not understand what the sensor is 'saying' hence why I asked if bearing was fitted correctly.

That's what seems to be happening, or sometimes it is on from the moment I start it! The guy tried two bearings, both caused the light to go off but caused the pedal to shudder. So I don't really know why it's coming on again now, if they said it solved the light issue. They couldn't have put the old bearing back in could they? Somebody said on here they're knackered on coming out?

Noticed what they meant this morning, started it, no ABS, drove it, shuddering in the pedal, then after a couple of minutes ABS warning light comes on and the pedal no longer shudders.

It's booked in for Monday with a specialist. £75 for diagnostic to start with.

To make things worse, started it earlier, drove, revs went a bit weird when I put the clutch in to change gear, didn't go down to idle below 1000, rose to over 2000, but not smoothly. It's happened again since and the engine is making a strange noise, like a belt, high pitched and goes in tune with the revs. Check engine light has now come on too. Great!

It's my abs light not the exclamation mark one.

Temperature doesn't show on start up either, shows dashes, thenregisters a temp after a few minutes later. Not a huge deal I know, but it seems to be since the garage messed about with it that it's got world's

2 days ago I had abs light on, now I've got abs light, brake shuddering just before abs light comes on, no temp at start up, revs doing strange things and check engine light on!

Update:

It's been to the Fiat garage today. Little bit vague really. They said it could be part of the loom, waiting on a part coming in for somebody elses car with similar problem to mine to see if it's the bit I need. If it is it's £85, if it's the full loom that I need the lady said it's big money!

Was suppose to cost £75 for the diagnostics today but they charged me nothing, must mean they know they're going to be getting a lot of money out of me some other way! Lol

Well they fitted that part... told me it was fixed, I paid £220, drove off and it wasn't fixed!

When they tested it the error light didn't come on, probably because they had the software plugged in!

So I've got exactly the same issue, a nice new bit of loom that I didn't need and the exact same issue!

Not amused!

Ooft, always cringe when a mechanic says 'could be'. You just know it's gonna be expensive!

How hard can it be though ffs, if that is your job there's no 'could be' about it, it is what it is and if you don't know what it is then get a new career!
