Technical Grande punto Alternator noise...

Hi all,

Thanks for posting the link andy. Basically andy has already answered my question as my driveway is on a downhill slant and I park with my nose pointing downhill so it may be the alternator bearing.

Does anybody know how much this will cost to replace? Is it something that needs looking at urgently? I drove around in it today after it hadn't been used for a week and it struggled to turn on the first time but after that was fine.

Any thoughts?

Cheers,
Phil

yes.....

if it seizes you will almost instantly loose power steering which if on a bend = Crash....

Go for an original alternator not a clone or rebuild.... as the GP is very very fussy and you will end up plagued with battery warning lights a good few members have been in the past...

just to give you an idea (hope your sat down) (for 1.4l petrol)

also order one of these

which diverts the water to avoid this

(my car was on the flat)

As Andy has said, make sure you go OEM as there have been lots of problems for people using pattern part ones on the GP.

It's unlikely to fail completely when in use, just might seize when it's stopped and prevent the engine from starting (or cause awful noise and burning smell as the belt slips if it does start). Had this happen on mums Yaris (although sounded ok when working).

I'm not sure if I saw on here someone mentioning you can sometimes get lucky spraying the whole of the internals with WD40 - not sure how good an idea that is though.

Hey guys, thanks for the answers.

After work today it was really whirring and it got much worse with any throttle (when it first started i couldn't hear it once i'd started driving). I've booked it in at the local fiat dealership, £65 just to diagnose the problem! I've told them what I think it is, and if it requires replacing i'll make sure they get an original part.

Does anybody have any experience with Platinum warranties from Olympic warranties? I got a free 12 months on it with my car and can't really find an explanation anywhere of what it entitles me to. If they have to replace my alternator do you think it will come under the warranty?

Cheers,

Phil
