Hi, wonder if someone can help my ongoing problem.

Basically if I leave my car over night and start itup in the morning you turn the key and less than a.second it starts with a thud and revs high, then they slowly drop.
This.morning I started it and less than a second it started then cut out. I tried to turn it over and it wouldn't start, tried again and it started with a smell of fuel.

This only happens if I leave it.over night, if I leave it for like 6 hours then go.back and start it, it starts no problem.

Anyone know what this could be ?
It's a active sport 1.4 8v with 40,000 Miles on

Thanks

Do you ever get any grinding when starting too? Mine has been doing this for over a year but it's never cut out, or not started. But the revs have done what you said, and still do now.

Nope, don't get any grinding, just like a quick start then a thud, then the smell of fuel, I've had a oil and filter change but haven't done the plugs, wondering if that could be it

How old is your battery mate? Ages ago I had the same symptoms, allbeit with no cutting out or smell of fuel, but the problem causer was the battery...especially on mornings. Sometimes it wouldnt start and instead it would just grind.

regarding the smell of fuel, have you noticed any on the floor after starting (if you've checked).

Hi mate, not sure how old the battery is, only had car 4 months, erm yeah checked for leaks no sign of them

could be that it is running rich (smell), but i cant confirm that. Hopefully someone who knows more regarding that can help.

The fact that its in the morning though suggests to me the battery. I tried to deny for ages that it was my battery causing it, bought a new battery and the difference was huge - started perfect thereafter

. Sorry i cant confirm, but your symptoms are same as mine (minus the smell of fuel) and a new battery fixed mine.

Hopefully someone will confirm what I have said though

Whats your method for starting. Do you use any throttle ??

Tell you what im doing tomorrow!.....MAP Sensor then !...May order a new one then, or firstly will try and clean breather hose, clean battery terminals etc... then start it up. :D, thanks alot

if that doesnt solve it, new battery!

oh and just start the car normally mate, no throttle just a turn of the key.

let us know :)

Hmm strange it is, done everything as said, I never use any throttle anyways when starting, I put my clutch down that's it, just had battery tested and its showing healthy :/ must be the map sensor then maybe

Possibly, but i was the same as you mate. Just see what the MAP sensor does, if it does nothing, I would say change the battery.

Mine tested as healthy too, but when I changed it all the starting problems went.

Sam

Oh I see, what battery did you get ? 40 oham?

I think it could be the battery because if I leave the car for like 6 hours, starts completely fine, if*I leave it fully over night, that's when I get the problem, maybe the battery can't handle the cold ?
