Hi All,

Bit of a car noob, so please be patient!
This is my first car, had 3 previous owners, bought it with 38k on the clock.
Only picked this car up in June, had a few problems with it see below:

- Starting car up
Understand that it is a diesel so needed to wait for half engaged ignition for a couple of seconds before engaging the start up as glow plugs need to warm up.
About 90% of the time, it starts up fine, however, sometimes, if I've had the lights on etc for a little too long, it will struggle to start up.
Three times, it has cut out and said it has an Engine fault and told me to check engine temperature.
Upon restart afterwards, its fine but temp dial is on nothing, then kicks in after a couple of mins in journey.
Any fixes on this? Or recommendations?

- Turbo fault
Last month I was doing approx 60mph in 4th (have 6 gears) going up a slight hill, engine fault light came up and I needed to call out the breakdown guys, turned out it was a Turbo fault ad I got it resetted.
I can find the code for you guys but didn't think it would affect my car as it ran fine afterwards.
Again, any recommendations on this?

- No acceleration/turbo
Yesterday, I was driving home 90 mile trip.
Was overtaking a lorry, when suddenly I had no acceleration, was just myself and another person in the car, couple of bags.
I pulled up in a service station, no warning lights, nothing.
I thought the turbo had fried or something, but no warnings from anywhere did a quick check on engine oil (fine) coolant (on min level) everything fine, I just set off again... no acceleration.
So I thought it was maybe in limp mode?
However after about 20 miles of 5th gear 60mph turbo kicked back in... acceleration back!
Fine until I was at tolls, stopped... paid... then set off with no acceleration whatsoever!
Again after about 10-15 miles it was fine. After that car ran fine...
Really baffled, can anyone shed some light on this?
I haven't turned car on today, was going to top up coolant, but I really don't know what to do!
Scared this may cost me a bomb to fix!

Search the forum for EGR cleaning/issues. There is a good guide on how to clean it. This may solve the low/no existent power. Also check all the boost hoses to and from the turbo/intercooler, standard hoses are prone to split.

I think there was an ECU update for the check engine temp starting issue, had this with my MJET but only happened once in a blue moon so didn't bother.

Also make sure the car is being serviced correctly and allowed to warm up fully before giving it the boot! What sort of journeys are you doing? motorway, short town driving? these cars need a good boot every so often to "clear out" if you like

P.s where in Hertfordshire are you from? few local members including myself might be able to help/look at the car if your not mechanically minded. I myself have owned a 1.9 mjet

I'm from Welwyn Garden City (Postcode AL7 4SQ) - That would be AMAZING if you could have a quick look!

Commute the last 3 months have been 40 mile daily round trips, mainly A roads and motorways not much town driving. On the odd occasion a 100 mile round trip to see friends etc.

I'll have a gander at it tomorrow, but little worried that if I book it into a garage they will quote me a massive cost!

Could it have been the turbo fault a couple of months back? Just baffled me that I had no power, yet there was no warnings from the sensors?
Either way, will top up coolant tomorrow, check it over and hopefully following the instructions on the forum it will be okay.

Cool im in AL7 3RU. My first guess would be the egr valve for the sluggishness. Get it off and be amazed at the amount of soot in it. I might have 2 blanking plates for the EGR you could have. If power/response is improved then it's that.

I also have fiat ecu scan on my laptop and an obd2 cable, I think that fault scans without the other "special" cables.

Do you have a driveway with lighting or garage? Happy to help but the weather's getting ****e now.

Afraid I don't have a driveway/garage.
Indeed, weather is a bit rubbish at the moment (n)
I topped up the coolant earlier on and fired it up, all seemed ok. Only moved it round the block, but will take it for a bigger spin tomorrow to the Galleria and back to see if the problem kicks up again.

You free this weekend? Sun possibly to have a look? Would be amazing if that is the problem, will defo let you know if the problem comes back up though!

I'm off on holiday for a week on Saturday. Could do the following Sunday?
Have a look in the grande punto guides section and see if you reckon you could take off and clean the EGR, it's a bit fiddley unless you have baby hands and it's prob overdue a clean anyway. That will save further issues down the line.
