Come to think of it, it may have been on all the time, but I can't remember the specifics (it's been a few years now! ).

Active diagnosis whether via Examiner or another machine/software should operate the same way- once the 'test' is finished, the part being operated will return to it's state before the active diagnosis began (if it was on, it will go back to being on after you leave the ECU). So no, I doubt it would leave the compressor de-activated.
