Technical M32 Gearbox Bearing

Well Mr Willey this molyslip is good stuff,put it in on Sunday, (took out the battery and tray for easirer access to the filler) did a 400 mile journey on Monday and the gear change is smoother and hopefully it will stave off the inevitable gearbox problems, thank you for your assistance and I look forward to the guide

I can confirm replacing the lower main shaft bearing has cured the whine and upon inspection is the only bearing with severe wear as described from all the Vauxhall threads. The gearbox is now very quite but 3rd and 4th still vibrate slightly when your hand is on the gearstick, which is fine for now until I can be bothered to do the other bearings. The gearbox no longer throws the gearstick backwards when you lift the clutch up in first gear and the slack has been taken out of the throw of the gearstick. Bit of a 'mare of a job but you only have to take the battery and battery tray out, gearbox mount off and then release all the nuts securing the gearbox end cap to the bell housing. Dropping the engine slightly makes access a lot easier.

Remove the circlip from the bearing and using a puller, pull 6th gear out a good 10 mill which in turn forces the bearing towards the end of the shaft. Then slide the 6th gear back to its original position and use the puller on the bearing itself. (This did require a bit of heat to get it to come off)

Push the new bearing on with the puller (used in reverse) refit the circlip. refit and fill with gearbox oil.

Job Done.

Just make sure 6th is on its synchro properly.

£47 repair v £1000 recon box :)

Hi, I have read your thread about replacing the bearing on the lower main shaft in your m32 box.

I understand everything apart from how you used the gear puller in reverse to push the new bearing back on.

Could you explain as I am planning on doing this very shortly.

I only have a whine in 5th and 6th. The box goes in and out of gears absolutely fine. Did you just replace the one bearing or did you do all three on the one end?

Thanks in advance.

This is all fascinating!

Can someone confirm what models have this infamous m32 gearbox - is the multijet, 6speeds, and does it include the Abarth?

Thanks.

Ah bringing up an old thread!
Just wondering willeywilson what bearing you got and where from?

My stick moves in 1st gear with the clutch, there is a little bit of a whine in 2nd, quite a lot of whine in 5th and a bit in 6th. To clarify this will just be the bearing on the lower main shaft?

This noise has always been present in the year and seven months I have had the car but became more prominent in the last week.

Cheers for any info!

Bump, can anyone tell me where they got the bearings from?
I can only find full sets online but tbh I don't know the exact details of the lower main shaft bearing itself

You might be able to save the day. I am also in Devon and have the dreaded whine in 5th and 6th . What was the name of the garage that changed your bearing and where are they.

Good job Wisey, I would have completely missed this otherwise! (y)

The place I used is in Somerset (I live in east Devon and work over the border), where abouts are you as I know some places that may be willing to help?

I made up an 'info pack' for the guy who did mine, running through willeywilson's steps and some diagrams of the box and shaft assemblies, can send on if it will help.

Just an FYI as I forgot to mention before, the work cost me £168 for 4.5 hours labour, £30 for g-box oil and £35 for the bearing - so £233 total for the bearing replacement :slayer:

Hi thanks for getting back to me. I am in Teignmouth, I am prepared to travel to get this sorted though.. I already have the diagrams you talk about.

Have you tried/are you aware of Perfect Service in Newton Abbot? They are a Fiat specialist and the owner Pete is a reasonable chap.
I found it was just a case of explaining what needed to be done and showing them diagrams etc. My guy said he was a bit apprehensive but once he got going it was pretty easy, just time consuming.
The place mine was done was John Beer motors in Chard (near my work), give them a call if you want and explain it, they will know what's required.
Cheers

I recently replaced the clutch in my Bravo t-jet( with the M32 gearbox).
It wasn't that hard.. only it took a lot of time getting all the things out of the way... and the gearbox is pretty heavy... the web said it's about 54 kg.
4.5 hours just to get the gearbox off ?? or for the entire job?

Gearbox kept in place to do this.
4.5 hours to;
  • remove all the relevant bits to gain access
  • take off the gearbox end cover
  • remove the end bearing on the lower main-shaft
  • put on the new bearing
  • reassemble and fill with oil

Thanks for the info I also have a whine in 6th and occasional difficulty getting into gear so might speak to John beer motors as they're local to me as well

Just as a reminder here though, you guys will probably have to source your own bearings and oil (though oil may not be a necessity, better quality and more of it will certainly reduce wear and likeliness of a repeat of the issue).
The improved bearing I got was this;
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mainshaft...arts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item339429cda2 as a replacement for my bearing part number: 55188083 (from a lot of digging).
And the oil this;
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FUCHS-TIT...764?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item486bef81d4 recommended by a couple places that deal with these bearing changes a lot. 3 litres of it too should keep a decent flow of oil.

As I said above the price for mine, that is only an indication, if you go to the same place as I did it may be cheaper now they have experience in the method but equally it could be more especially if you have the 1.9 as it is a bigger lump so may need lowering to gain full access (mine is the 1.6 mjet so a bit more room to play with).

Good luck guys!
