Thought I was going to total my '06 GP last night....

60MPH down a dark country road, round a slight bend to be confronted by the glowing eyes of a deer in the middle of the road

Jammed on the brakes, ABS did it's job, slight lock up, then hit it at about 10mph  Deer bounced off the bumper, gave me a look of disgust, and just f**k'd off !

So, after checking I hadn't actually sh@t myself, got out to check the inevitable damage as i'm hoping to trade this in shortly :bang:.... to my surprise... not a scratch !

Bloody lucky, and bloody surprised there was no damage ! Let's just hope the newer models are built as well :D

Not that I would listen to my own advice but you shouldn't be doing 60 in an area known to have deer in the road. The chances of stacking it are higher than around a school.

But the repercussions are much less grave. As long as you hold your nerve and keep it on the road then the worst that can happen is you end up with a smashed up bonnet, bumper and windscreen, and a tastey supper.

Best make the most of 60mph limits on rural roads whilst they last.

Well I drive through forrests quite often and the worst that can happen is you fly down the embankment and pick a fight with a tree lol. Im pretty sure many people have died in this way.

Only if you stack it, often caused by people not knowing how to drive properly. You brake, if you hit it you hit it, you don't yank the steering round 180 degrees like a loon and then loose control. Steer around it if you safely can, but normally you won't get a chance, so don't bother.

I drive country roads daily, have done of the last 6 years, hit my first deer back last month, next to no damage luckily. I could have been doing 20, and not hit it, could have been doing this for the last 6 years, and not got anywhere also. (n)

Why ? It's a national speed limit A road, mostly straight... just happens to be in the middle of nowhere & unlit....

its a limit not a target, you are supposed to slow for blind bends could be anything around there drunk bloke in dark clothes, broken down car with no lights because its electrical breakdown, or worse a poor little rabbit

I'm a firm believer in darwin theory. If your retarded enough to go too fast for the conditions or go beyond your driving ability / your cars ability you deserve to get hurt / killed. Why do we need a government and it's laws to babysit the ignorent morons? We are over populated as it is.

The OP was clearly driving within his limits and for the conditions as he's managed to almost fully stop. Making a blanket statement of "Dont do 60mph down a dark country road." when you haven't got a clue of the situation / driving conditions is silly.

The rule of thumb is you should be able to stop within the distance you can see to be clear.

In other words if you can't see round the bend at the same rate as you're going round it then you're going too fast.

Haha maybe my reply was a bit of a sweeping statement! Ths why i shudnt write things when drunk. The point i had in my head was surely If the road is known to you to have animals such as deer on it, then perhaps you should slow down to go round a corner? Lol.

Sorry, I keep forgeting to add the bit on the end of that.

The rule of thumb is you should be able to stop within the distance you can see to be clear and reasonably expect to remain clear.
