Confused as to how this turned into a discussion about whether i'm a dangerous driver or not

Anyway, I know the road well, there are no 'Wild Animal' signs about, there's a wall and deer fence on one side of the road, and a brand spanking new deer fence recently erected on the other side. I have only once seen a deer on this road, other than this one - so i wouldn't say it was a known road for deer hazards.

As I say, it's an NSL road (I'd go as far as saying it's a semi-arterial route), I ALWAYS drive within the speed limits (GP is more efficient at lower speeds, and im a tight bas***d), and for the conditions of the road - there are plenty of sections of this road where i'm down to 40/30.

RE: things on the road. The most dangerous thing on this road is bikers doing 90+

Not a blind bend, a SLIGHT bend. If i pedestrian/car was there, i'd have seen it. A small (baby) deer on the left hand verge... no, not until it walks out in front of you. If i had adaptive cornering headlights, then maybe i'd have spotted it earlier, but unfortunately the GP doesnt have those.

I was actually likely doing less than 60, you take the previous corner around 40, and acellarate out of it.... so i was likely about 50 when i braked.

Here's the road & corner ahead.... lemme know if i'm still 'dangerous', or if you'd handle it differently.

Back to what i was saying, suprising there was no damage, even for a low speed impact, i was expecting some damage to bumper/light... but as i said, not even anything superficial. :slayer:

Oh, one more thing, i did call the Police to report it, more because i was concerned i had probably injured the deer than anything else. They came out and had a look around with their torches... but it had well and truly buggered off.

Pfft your going far to fast you boy racer.

TBH, I was in 'foot down' mode that evening, probably the only reason I missed them, find more alert sometimes when in foot down mode :p

Wouldn't have bothered myself, nature will sort the deer out.

I'm a firm believer in darwin theory. If your retarded enough to go too fast for the conditions or go beyond your driving ability / your cars ability you deserve to get hurt / killed. Why do we need a government and it's laws to babysit the ignorent morons? We are over populated as it is.

The OP was clearly driving within his limits and for the conditions as he's managed to almost fully stop. Making a blanket statement of "Dont do 60mph down a dark country road." when you haven't got a clue of the situation / driving conditions is silly.

I agree with you but I'm going to take this opportunity to point out the obvious for the sake of discussion :D

A national speed limit isn't an invitation to do 60mph. You can get stopped by the police even if you are under the limit. I learnt this the hard way at 18 when I was stopped for doing 40 in a 60 because the copper thought I was driving too fast for the road and at the time he was right, I was being stupid. He let me off but it wasn't a fun experience and I learnt from it.

That being said doing 30 in a 60 when most of the traffic is doing 50+ is just as dangerous imho. If you don't have the confidence to drive on that road then don't use it! But I doubt that applies to any of us.

I guess the rule is. Read the road and drive accordingly.

That looks like 75% of the roads around where I live, if not wider! I wouldnt hesitate to do 50-60 on this section.
I had a close call a couple of years back, I was in my ex's Peugeot Hotpoint(107) and she was speeding. Came across a heard of deer stood in the road after a steepish incline. Slammed on the brakes and locked up (no ABS/faulty) and took out the legs of a baby deer at the back of the pack.
If she had been going slower then she would have been able to brake without locking up after seeing the deer. Her car was almost a write off as the suspension of the passenger side was collapsed completely.

But Personally, my view is to drive within your and your cars limits and take uncertenties into account but dont live your life expecting something to happen (eg. doing 35 in a 60 because it rained last week).
