Well after replacing the following on my 57 plate GP T-Jet

2x wheel bearings
2x re-circulation valves
gearbox rebuild
bonnet/washer jet plastic panel
exhaust back box
radio headunit
front drivers brake caliper
front end respray due to laquer peeling off
headlights leaking so lots of condensation
paintwork repair on the rear as laquer started peeling off

It started badly misfiring last week and after a lengthy time at the garage it was diagnosed with a failed headgasket, so the head needs to be sent off for re-skimming and a new gasket fitted. On a car that has less than 49,000 miles on it i am far from pleased. I have a honda ek4 ready and waiting to replace it which is on 90,000 and is in far better condition. I cant say i will be in a hurry to buy another fiat but i will be in a hurry to get shot of this car

Sounds like you have been very unlucky, not heard of a head failing on a t-jet before. Touch wood my 07 t-jet hasn't required anything other than tyres and a service in the 18 months I've had it. Not sure I'd come on the forum to complain about a car I was trying to sell but I understand the frustration of owning a pup, my previous Peugeot 407 was a fine example of one.

will having a abarth turbo, increased boost, induction kit and whatever else not had an effect on this?

not heard of any "standard tjets" with headgasket failure....

ps not having a dig, as you know, my car is mapped so i cant talk lol....but my engine is meticulously maintained, oils change every 6k, coolant every 2 years, always flush engine before oil change, let her warm and cool gently, levels checked weekly, etc etc use fuel cleaner monthly and so on

Seems its just one of them cars, like when you did all the work to the engine and it only made 155bhp :s very strange, it's a nice looking car such a shame (n) can't go wrong with a civ, stick a b18 or k20 lump in and away you go! :D

And you think an ancient Honda with high mileage will be any better? Lol.

Yes.

A high mileage Honda will easily take abuse with no problems. Obviously if you drive like a tool, don’t let it warm up, check oil etc then yes it will break.

Very rarely do you hear of HG failures on B16/18. They are more likely to spin bearings due to lack of oil. My mates DC2 had 140k, and he had put 20k of hard abuse and it never missed a beat, it was a quick one.

Regularly see B16/18 with well over 100k with no “real” noted problems

EDIT: Dont know how the down thumb is there

sure i read something about gymjunkie's head gasket going somewhere in this thread, may be wrong though ;)

Just read this:

"Honda cars have got to be the most overrated cars ever built. It seems that anyone who owns a Honda becomes a brainwashed Lemming, buying into the delusion that Hondas are defect free, never break down, and have better performance than any other make of car, especially those "unreliable American gas guzzlers". The automotive press consistently praise Honda products while overlooking their flaws, and do exactly the opposite to any domestic vehicles"

^ all points above I agree with.

I assume that we are talking about the ek civic, and the b16 vtec engine. Yes the engines are near bullet proof. However that’s not to say the cars are fault free. Most noticeable fault/problem is that nearly every UK civic will be eaten alive by rust, especially around the arches and engine bay.

However the mechanical parts are generally sound, very rarely do we hear of these failures, but folk I know pay good money maintaining their cars so may help them to be fault free.

I am perfectly happy for the civic to break, but unlike the Punto i can fix it all myself and at a much cheaper cost. Parts are easy to come by and upgraded parts are readily available. I have already fitted silicone coolant hoses, lightweight aluminium radiator and slim fan, carbon fibre air intake system and a few other bits which came in at under £300 and i fitted them myself in the garage - try doing that for the same cost with the GP
