Hi, sorry for bringing up this canard, had a search through other threads but can't find find quite the same info as for my engine.

Having the old 'whining on start-up / occasional high-pitched whistling during acceleration' problem. Just had cambelt and water pump done so I know it isn't that. My car is 1.4 16v and doesn't have aircon. About to take it back to garage and ask them nicely to have a look at it, but don't want them to rip me off and would like to know roughly what I'm talking about...

1 - Looking at the s4p parts this looks as though it doesn't have a separate tensioner - is this right? Assume it's this belt - http://www.shop4parts.co.uk/?name=store&op=Details&ProdID=1711&sku=4855

2 - can the existing belt be slackened / tightened, or is replacement the only (sensible) option?

3 - Need the car for lots of things from next week, so how long a job would it be for the garage to do a replacement? Don't want to pay for 4 hours labour then find it's a ten minute job...

4 - would a wrongly tensioned belt explain a juddery idle and slightly rough running, or is that just something I have to live with, bearing in mind I've had it serviced and the other belts replaced and the engine still visibly moves around at idle? Could a throttle relearn (as mentioned in other threads) help, or is that specific to the 8v engines?

Oh to be close to a fiat specialist garage.

Many thanks, as ever.
Tim

An incorrectly tensioned cambelt will cause the same noise symptoms, and as far as I remember, the 16v has an automatic tensioner for the aux belt to maintain the correct tension.
