Hi, wondered if anyone could help. I have just posted this in the newbies part then realised there is a Grande Punto forum!!

I have a fiat grande punto 06 reg that has decided not to start. The immobiliser light is staying on. At first I thought it was the battery but the radio and windows work fine. Had it tested by a mechanic who could not get into the system he needed to. Believe its one of a few things; ecu fault, immobiliser fault, dodgy cable. I am rubbish with cars and need some advice.

I am a student (mature) and dont have many pennies left lol Therefore a little advice would be great. Also helps when people come try tell me what it is - sorry to say but some people are rip offs!!! Had a bad experience with a mechanic before trying to tell me i needed loads doing and would cost me £300+VAT but when i went to another mechanic it was the fuel sump!!! haha. Anyway i am pretty desperate as I need to get to Uni by next Weds and its 40 miles away!

Any help would be greatly appreciated :worship:

Try leaving the battery negative off overnight. Stand to be corrected but I believe it has resolved the problem in other fiats.

First off try your spare key......

next get hold of a jump lead and try attaching it to the NEGATIVE battery terminal (one with the quick release battery terminal) DO NOT CONNECT TO LIVE!

Then put the other end onto a clean metal bright bit of engine

(a broken / defective battery negative cable can cause this to happen high resistance = lower voltage and the ecu throwing a paddy

Check also the connection of the key reader ring, behind the ignition. It´s a black thin cable atached to a plastic ring.

Hi. I am very new to this. I've been having a problem with my 08 punto for a while now.
Sometimes when I try to start the car, the immobiliser light stays on which cuts the car out. I have been told that it is something to do with my key (i only ever got one key with the car so have no spare to try)
If so I should get a new key made, however the problem only happens now and again so is it really something broken or could it be a connection issue somewhere?
I hope this explains it properly. I dont want to spend a couple of hundred on a new key if that won't solve the problem!
Thanks

Yes my ABS warning light comes on sometimes and then goes off for weeks then randomly comes back on. I thought it was down to something not being fixed back correctly as I have had my brakes and droplinks changed recently.

Is that something to do with the immobiliser light?

Does the abs light come on when you can't start the car?

When I had a new clutch slave cylinder installed the mechanic left the gearbox earth covered in fluid. The car wouldn't start, the imboliser light came on and the abs failed. From my understanding there wasn't enough voltage to the abs unit which causes the car to shut down due to safety

No the abs light isn't staying on at all now, the only light that's a problem is the immobiliser light however I think I found the problem!

My key isn't giving off a signal so it's something to do with the chip inside being broken. Not having been given a spare key when I bought the car (my own stupid fault for not getting one made) I have no way of testing this 100%.

Does anyone know of anyone who is able to make keys for fiats? My local fiat dealer put me through to the aa who have said that a new key will be 280 plus vat.

Hi, :)

keys aren't cheap - due the the security built into them,

google"auto locksmith" in your area, ( @£100)
you MAY need a CODE to get the new key ( + chip) to work with your car though,
this CODE is avaialble from ANY FIAT dealer..,
but is basically am A4 print out and the charge for it varies.. ring around..;)
( £15 / £35)

food for thought..https://www.fiatforum.com/500/347958-spare-key-2.html

If you need to test the key then pop into any high street key cutters that does car keys. Most branches of Timpson do. And ask them to check your key on there programmer. If working it should read as id46 pcf7946. But if your problem is intermittent then this might not be full proof.
I'm assuming your key is a remote key. The non remote keys are pretty bullet proof if they do fail then it's permanent you wouldn't get an intermittent fault caused by a non remote key. However the remote keys have the immobiliser built into the remote circuit board and can suffer from broken solder joints and corrosion causing intermittent faults.

I took the advice and googled a locksmith in my area. Found one who quoted me 225 for a whole new key. Turned out when he came he was able to transfer the data from my broken transponder chip to a new one, put it in a new key and charged 175, also got a spare cut for 25.

Immobiliser problem sorted, very happy with it. Thanks for all the help!

Found this via the search as I think I had this issue today on an 07 GP. Pulling up to a set of traffic lights and lost power, had the power steering light, the immobiliser light (the car and lock) and a few other lights. Tried key in and out a few times, ultimately the car started again after opening and closing the drivers door. Any idea what I should look at first?

Huuum, driver's door= fuel pump and inertia switch in the "A" pillar. Beside the traditionnal grounding fault I would have a look in this area ...

BTW, good to see that some forumers do know the search function ;-)

Hi!
Also check the wires in the rubber concertina to the drivers door for open and shorts, electric noise from sparks can do "funny" things with computorised electronics.

Thanks for the replies! The car wouldn't start at all this morning. I didn't have time to look out the spare key, but I'll do that first. I may also pop into Timpsons at lunch and get them to check the key I do have if you reckon that'd be worthwhile at this stage?

Update: I tried the other key and it worked over a short journey no issues. I then tried the main key and it also worked. Went back to the spare key and over a short journey the car would intermittently cut out dead and then start again no problem. When it did cut out, rather than get the immobiliser light and ABS light, the temp needle swept up to max and then back down.

So, I'm thinking it's not a key issue. The negative terminal has been disconnected from the battery in the meantime, but is there something else I should be looking at based on this new info?

Ground, ground, ground ... remember cables MAY look good but are actually internally rotten, this IS a VERY COMMON failure and has been documented MANY MANY times.

One can't troubleshoot car's electronics without staring from a good basis, and all the gremlins in there will play a lot and throw every sort of errors/misbehavior if there is a grounding (or positive) issue ...

Today I followed the really useful guide Andy posted about the earthing points in the GP, but I'm still having the same issues with both keys intermittently. Sometimes the car won't start, sometimes it does but then it will cut out. The temp needle sweeps to max and the immobiliser light comes on. Can anyone suggest what to check next? Or is it time to call in an expert :(

Hi I have had similar issues and have posted this just about everywhere please check the fuse box just take out the fuse box and look at the 3 plugs that go into the bottom you may find as I did that they are full of water so dry them out clean all the connections and put it back together. The other likely culprit will be the earth lead from the battery. Hope this helps
