I got my Grande Punto 1.9 Sport with 150.000 km on the clock.
Now it's in 163.000 (5.5 months later) and it's starting to make noises I don't trust.
At first it was only a light noise but two weeks ago I drove 210Km/h for about 15 minutes straight. All in 6th gear. No signs of overheating or anything.

But now the car makes sounds that were'nt there before.

I seems like the gearbox as the sound is gone when I push the clutch.
It's not the cluch bearing, I would reconize that sound.

Shifting to gear is harder that before.
Sometimes it slips to 3rd instead of 5th.
The sound is only when I accelerate or decellerate.
When driving on cruise I don't hear the sound.
The sound is most noticable on 2nd 5th and 6th gear.
Could the gearbox be on it's way out?
I still have 17 days of warranty so I do hope that if it will fail it fails now.

I tried to find topics with recordings but could'nt find them.
Also youtube could not show me one.

Maybe some had the problem and has a video of it so I can compair?
It's going to the garage monday as the have to replace the pedal box so I can also point them at this.

Most of the time I drive slowly and relaxed.
I don;t care if the drive takes 10 minutes longer the punto is great to drive:p
Shift around 1800 rpm and don't rely get over 2200rpm.
Only when the engine is nicely warm and I go onto the freeway I pull through the gear till 4000rpm.
And that cruise in 6th at 2200rpm.

Let's hope the garage says the same so it can be fixed within the warranty.

Tbh I'm sure driving at 130mph isn't going to be kind on the box, the m32 gearbox is crap at best, and running it flat out in 6th will accelerate its crapness.

You'll need basically a full rebuild, as the gearbox bearings and diff will be toast

I have the same noises and getting louder each day. 42,000 miles and knackered!!

After 30 years of driving and some of my cars with 100K plus miles on them this is the first gearbox I have had go.

New gearbox and a clutch to be fitted in the next couple of weeks. And I said not long ago the car was running great.

Tempted with a quaife diff since everything is coming out. What do you all reckon?

Got the car back from the garage yesterday.
They drove it and topped up the oil, sound gone they say.
Didn't hear anything on the way home as I was listening to the radio:rolleyes:
Today I drove it to work and noticed it was a bit more damped the before but still there, and after more and more km's it got worse.
Now second gear is even worse thet before the topped it up.
So I called them and there gonna make a request to the dealer for a new gearbox.
I'm realy hoping the agree without a hassle so the gearbox is changed before it fall apart when the warranty is expiered on the 27th.

Good luck with that one mate. I've had mine's for 3 weeks now it it makes a squeaky noise when changing gears. Timing belt it getting done in 2 days so gonna ask them to have a nosey and see if it's anything obvious, strange noises appear to happen in Punto's though lol.

50 000 miles before my box began to whine. The bearings were all replaced at a cost of over £1000. Same time I had a new clutch in. Weeks later the DMF failed Another £900 to fix.

Tommorow its in for its alternator. This will be alternator three now!

I'm gonna give them a call if they can replace the clutch bearing and clutch also.
As the box is off already I guess I will only have to pay for the parts.
As the car ran 164.000km with the original parts I don't want to wait until their gone;)

Got an update today.
The revision company that checked the gearbox said one of the shaft tilted.
This caused wear on a the shaft and several rings.
Total revision costs 1200 euro's!!!

So the garage contacted the company to claim the warranty.
Í will have to wait for an answer before they continue.

oh dear, my gps multijet is going to the garage next thursday to have the gearbox looked at. whines in 1st and 2nd and makes a funny noise in 5th and 6th lol.

having read the posts above, the problem did get worse after my little (private (y))motorway race on the way down to Devon with a fiesta st500 and a passat at 130mph
